Today the Northern Tool spring summer catalog came to my mail box. Looking at page 56 there is some nice double action sickle bar. They come in 6 and 7 foot sizes. This is the first time I had seen this. Right now the 7 foot is saying to me buy me. I think I will call them tomorrow and buy one. My old sickle mowers are so shot I took two them to the scrap. This new one is three point as hydraulic lift. For $3799.99 I don’t think it is that bad.

For 3800 bucks, it would be saying "You've got to be kidding" to me. Pick up a used disc mower for $1,500 or so, and you'll never look back.

I purchased a 7 ft 3pt massey sickle mower from a neighbor a couple months ago. I used it for the first time last week and it worked great. I did almost get it tangled in a fence once but stayed clear of the fense after that. I'm not sure what model massey it is but the teeth were sharp and in good condition. I was impressed.

I have a NH 451 in a 7' and 9' after you have a 9' you won't want a 7'. why not cut 2 extra feet in the same amout of time. Fuel prices ain't going down.

I bought a NH 451 last November, used for $2500 at a dealer. I like sickles, I was hesitant at first with everything bad I have heard about them, but I like it. I like the way it cuts, and don"t have much trouble with it so far. I have a 479 Haybine, and 451 sickle. To me the disk mowers were way too expensive. Ed

You can't be serious.

For $3800, it better come with a tractor.

If you are hell bent on getting a mounted sicklebar mower, go look at a New Holland 451. They come 7' or 9'. One of the few major mfg still offering a sicklebar and I would bet the price won't be any more than Northern Tool and you'll have a place to get parts (which you're going to need, trust me) forever.

For that price you could buy a pretty good used brand name disk mower. We made the switch from sickles to disc machines five years ago and would have a hard time going back to a sickle. We cut our mowing time by half with the same size machine and the disc mower is alot cheaper to run.

The IH pitmanless mowers are the best out there. A new 1100 trailer mower is around $6000, but there are tons of good used ones out there for well under $2000. The 100 and 1100 are trailer type mowers, the 130 and 1300 are 3-point mount, and there are others, I have an 1110 mounted on my H and recently bought a 120 for my other H...

Here's the 1110:

And the 120, drawbar mounted:

Maybe for a year or so until Northern drops the mowers because them don't sell enough of them to pay. Best to buy brand name then you know you can get parts is 24 hrs or less for the next fifty years. Brand name will have much better resale down the road to.
