I got my oats put in yesterday but it was plenty wet when I started. But dryed out nicely during the day.

The old timers use to say mud in the oats and dust in the corn.

Gary

Not that far south of you there is very little being done here yet. I sprayed 135 acres last night and another 135 acres this morning but it's really marginal to be out there and we are getting a set of 18.4x38 tires for the sprayer since it's not going to dry up anytime soon. My brother is running over a few acres of chiseled corn stalks with the Phillips harrow this morning but we really need another full day of good drying weather before it's fit to do any tillage.

Man wish we were doing that around here. I am laid off for another 3 weeks. I would be looking for a PT job pulling a disk for some one.

HEY..... Have truck can travel. Any one looking for a tractor hand for a few weeks?

Who would have ever thought that one of the "tools" to take to the field would be a digital camera? Sure is a nice way to share with others as to what you farmers do to feed the world. I grew up on a farm (ND) but have no connection to them now except I do understand and appreciate what all of you do. Thanks. My hat is always off to farmers! (Ron, retired electronics-engineer, and I still have my feet in the dirt on a few hobby acres!)

I'd heard it was mud in the oats and dust in the wheat and the bins will overflow. Either way, been considering frost seeding oats. We're supposed to get another snow storm tomorrow!

Around here the only thing that would get planted is the tractor . before this cold and snowy snap the fields were just starten to ferm up but ya had to watch for the wet spots . when we were getting the last four loads of corn off there were places that we made some good tracks and the littel bit of manuar that we hauled on the high ground was cutting in . Stayed out of the lower areas as they were not fit to walk across.

Yea. Know how you feel Gary. We got the drill out and cleaned it all up a couple of weeks ago, but we ended up using a cart to seed. Yesterday morning we was disking mud. It was a challlenge at times, but then when we left for dinner and came back you could tell the difference. It was looking pretty good about 5 well we seeded it after the cultivator had been over it. So hopefully something grows. This was in Southern Iowa by the way. Decatur County. -Dan

It has finally dried out here to the point where a friend said he started plowing sod on friday and a few people put on nh3 nearby yesterday. I didnt see anyone but heard that about 5 miles west and then more to the north guys were running. I looked at some fields yesterday afternoon and it looks like in 2 to 3 days field work could begin in earnest. Of course it is supposed to rain for 4 out of the next 5 days. bill

Here the saying is/was plant oats when the Service Berry blooms (now), plant corn when the Dogwood blooms. Looks good Gary, except for that green drill behind a red tractor. How do those two get along. LOL

Service berry just starting to bloom on April 3rd, 77 degrees, freezing April 5th til now.

Looks like ya got 'er nailed Gary. Really looks good!

My neighbor was out yesterday afternoon running liquid on his wheat. Seems a bit wet to me yet, but he must know what he's doing. :>)

The farming practices are so much different between the northertn and southern part of USA. In Texas one could never plant oats this late and expect a crop. Here oats and wheat are heading out. Some will be baled in next 30 days. Tx Jim

Here in Michigan it is the time to plant oats right now, but we have snow and rain and mud and some frozen ground, so if we don't have a good spring for planting them they are almost a wash to plant because if they flower too late they don't pollinate good in the heat, that is why most of the good quality oats around here come from up in Canada.

Jim, I am waiting for a good 5 or 6 day no-rain forecast to cut my oats for hay. They are already headed out in the "middle dough" stage right now. Tom

It amazing how these guys find you when you are tilling a field.

By the time I finished there had to be a thousand of them here.

My dad used to say that every farmer should have his birds. Don't remember gulls following us on this farm, although I see 'em elsewhere. Probably most of them have taken to patrolling parking lots around McDonalds now, however! I had vultures circling my field today, wonder what they wanted?

Wanna know how to get rid of them? They pick all the worms that do the soil good and are really offering back nothing to a farmer. Most of my neighbours take care of it when fall plowing. You just have to shot one and set it up on the furrow in plain sight and it won't be long the rest will leave...neighbour swears it works

We are STILL looking at some of the same snow banks that originated in November! It will be two weeks before I can get to where my airseeder is parked. May 20 to 25 is usually the best time to seed oats here. Oats don't stand late spring frost as well as some other crops. Also seeding a bit later gives an opportunity for some wild oat control preseeding.
