Having had both,I'd go with the Fergie in a heartbeat. It has a 100% better engine. Valve in head vs the Ford flat head. The rest of the tractor is pretty much the same. All the old Dearborn implements and attachments will fit either one. I don't know that there is a dimes worth of difference in the horse power, just in the longevity of the engine.

well i can get either the ford 8n or the TO-30 for $1900. If i can get a tractor better than that and within my driving distance i will hop on it. I've never owned a tractor and i am open to any advise!! I live in the syarcuse,NY area

That is $1000 more than a good Allis Chalmers WD will cost you, and the Allis will pull both of them backward at the same time. Both the Ford and the Fergie are just about worthless for any kind of mowing becasue they don"t have live or independent PTO. But they are what some people think of when they think of a tractor so they are WAY overvalued. If you can buy either one for $500 to $700, then you are in the right ballpark. Otherwise let the seller find another fool to unload these yard orniments on.

Between the two the TO 30 is the better tractor all the way around but there are a lot better tractors than either in their price range.

If those were my only choices ( there's alot more usefull models around )I'd think that the TO30 has more power. But those are both really old and could be worn out and may of lost alot of power too ? The prices of those has fallen due to people wanting a tractor with live pto and hyd. so don't pay too much !

Had an 8N now own a 1715 Ford/New Holland after using 1715 4wd on WV hillsides I sold 8N . 8N doesn't have live PTO or HYD , & brakes are marginal at best even with new linings . try to find you a tractor like a MF 135 or equal to something with live PTO & HYD .

That's like asking if you'd rather be stoned to death or shot to death. Destination's the same. Flip a coin.

Why not look for something a whole lot newer, with more features, and probably not much more money. There's lots better out there than both of them.
If nostalgia is your reason for buying one or the other, then don't mind me.
But, if you're just looking for a tractor to work with, keep looking. There's better value out there.

In the last 15 years we have had 2 MF tractors and I think they are as good as you can get. I am a Farmall collector but for work nnowadays, give me a MF any day

Thats sort of one of them 6 to one or half dozen to the other things between the 2 of them. I think I would check around to see what dealer you have close and what parts you can find easier before I would pick either one. Both in there days had there good and bad points.
