here I am again-- this has got me stymied-- the pto pops out under load-- can't find anything wrong inside-- so my question is there an adjustment on the lever on the side that puts it in gear-- it's been a long time since I've worked on these so help it has a splined pto shaft not the old paddle type

Any in/out play on the pto stub sticking outta the tractor/ if so.. worn bearing.. and it is walking out o fthe coupler.

Other causes could be a worn detent on the shifter.

Rodin gave you good advice.

What model Ford and what type PTO? Only a guess, but if it's one of the hundred or thousand series, then the snap ring on the rear bearing retainer may be broken or missing. That lets the shaft float enough to do what you describe. You will see end play in the shaft. Probably a 1/4" or better...

rod-- I thought this was a 9N but when I took the pto shaft out it is splined not the old paddle type I'm used to/ so I think it might be a 2N or the whole pto has been changed, but I doubt that-- it does have the mag down in the front like the old 9N-- I have to get back to the barn and find the serial # so I can tell just model it is-- if it is that snap ring can it be put in from the top or does the tractor have to be split thanks bruce
