I was always told to rotate radial tires front to back/back to front on same side. Had front end aligned on Mercury Mountaineer today...have had cupping on inside of front right tire...and technician told me to criss-cross rotate them...and that it was a myth that you should only rotate them front to back.

What do you guys think? Sorry for the O.T.
Tim

Never have crisscrossed radial tires, always front to back and back to front. The tires always seemed to wear evenly, but nearly all experience has been with a straight rear axle. Only one has an independant rear suspension and it doesn't get driven very much (plastic chevy).

I have been kris crossing tires for years and it worked out very well for me.This way they wear much more even, and they don't go from front to back on the same side. It seems to me this is the best way, unless you want to buy more tires.

Any ASX Asymetric tire is not correct running other way.

The owners manual says on a 15" four tire rotation to cross the fronts to the rear and move the rears straight forward. But when you have them rotated again in another 5 or 10 thousand miles what are you supposed to do? Do you put them back where they were originally? I think the other posters are right on when they say that to cross a radial is perfectly fine with todays tires and you don't have to worry about crossing again.

Jak's answer is spot on. 30 years ago, you couldn't change rotation without the tires disintegrating. Not so anymore...

I used to do alighnments, tires, rotate and balance, the whole shootin match, and it won't hurt anything to criss cross them.I do it all the time.Tire technology is so advanced now that turning in the opposite direction is not a factor anymore.Back in the day it wouldn't have been a good idea but now go for it.If one slips a belt now it wasn't any good to start with.(Directional tires have to be turning one way but for the rest it is ok).Good luck.
