When I was a teenager, I tried contacts for awhile. Back in the 60's, I think that only hard lenses were available. I found that the combination of contacts and any amount of dust was a recipe for disaster! The dust would get under the contact and irritate the eyes. I actually had tears run down my face when I tried to do field work or ride a dirt bike. The other problem I had was that my glasses wouldn't work right for a long time after I had had contacts in. It was like I needed a different prescription, although the glasses worked just fine after a couple of hours wearing them. Then I fell asleep with the contacts in. When I awoke, I was in terrible pain and couldn't see out of one eye. The eye doctor told me that the injury was the worst blister he had ever seen caused by a contact lens. He put medication in the eye to deaden it and I had to wear a patch over that eye for several days. After that I tried putting the contacts in again, but they felt awful, so I never did it again. I went back to glasses again full time. To me, glasses are much more practical than contacts, and also much cheaper. A number of times wearing glasses has protected my eyes from objects that would have really hurt if they had hit the eye instead of just bouncing off the glasses. And dust is much less of a problem for glasses, where it might prevent me from doing what I want to if I was wearing contacts. The modern soft contacts might work better than the hard lenses I had experience with, but I have had absolutely no desire to try them. Glasses just work too good for me.
