Any of you guys work at a packing plant? We're vegetarian at our house, but we have a little Yorkie/Shetzu dog who is not. We keep some cheap bologna on hand for him. He will do just anything you can think of for a slice of that stuff! I've done a few Google searches/little reading, but can any of you tell me how a company can manufacture/market a pound of bologna for $.88/lb. and still make money? How is that stuff made?

I think your answers will be further reason for me to remain a vegetarian!

Thanks,
Glenn F.

Gene that is excactly right. They outlawed metyhl bromide for weed control in plant beds, such as tobacco, but still use it on tomatoes to ripen them after shipping. They are picked green then treated with metyhl bromide to turn the skin red. It isn't safe to smoke it, but ok to eat I guess.

A friend of mine toured a packing house. He always butchered his own animals, so when he seen piles of white stuff he asked what it was. He was informed it was hot dogs and bologna. He claimed it was all white without a trace of red. I eat the stuff and enjoy it, but like most food if we only had a clue, we sure would not eat it at all.

A old school teacher used to work picking tomatoes for catsup. He claimed they only made one trip across the field, green, or half rotted it all ended up in the pot. He would not even look at a catsup bottle, let alone eat it.

We always cleaned the guts for casings as a child, and that helped us tone down on the new fresh sausage.

So in conclusion of all this bad stuff I think I will just to be on the safe side go eat a egg and then get some rest. Because I know that all chicken butts are clean, and a unborn baby chicken just has to taste great.

Any of you guys that went to the universaty of Nam ever eat nook mom ? Sorry if my spelling isn't so good, but i can't type and projectile puke at the same time. That is a chickens fertilized egg that is buried in the warm sand, and a day before it hatches out --they suck it down without cooking.

We don't buy meat at the store. We either raise it or shoot it ourselves. I do, however, buy an ocasional pack of bologna. I like the stuff, my kids love the stuff, seems only my wife is smart enough not to eat it. I like the cheap hotdogs too. I imagine they are just bologna in a rolled up form. When my grandparents used to butcher their own hogs we ate pretty well everything. Even made blood pudding, head cheese, and pickled heart. Bologna can't be much worse.

I love bologna, and most meat and meat products. If it don't bite back I will eat it.

We were, for a time, really poor. A beef tongue was cheap. We cleaned it, easily done. Boiled it until tender. Chopped it fine. Mixed with boiled finely cubed potatoes, pickles, maybe chopped boiled eggs. It was really good and low cost. Ate possum occasionally too. We still live somewhat the same way. You would not believe that savings we have accumulated by watching very penny. You don't get rich by spending like crazy.

Someone mentioned cow rectum. Have you ever thought about the close proximity of ham to the corresponding part of a hog?

I clearly was not trying to make an issue of vegetarianism or strike up controversy of any kind. I only ment I'm not too knowledgeble of the entire packing industry. Plenty of non-vegetarians will not eat cheap bologna.

I like my pet too much to feed him bologna. As for meat I raise my own chickens, turkeys and shoot bush beef ( deer and/or moose). Should something have to be purchased, it's good stuff from the local butcher that looks like meat. Edible oil products are another interesting "food" additive. As for vegatarians... Most I've seen fall into one of two groups. #1 they call them selves vegatarians but they consume milk products & eggs. And when asked if they are vegatarians a sthey are eating chicken or fish. Thier answer is " I don't eat red meat". #2 Are rable rousers looking for attention by stirring things up. As for my family & myself. We eat a balanced diet from all the food groups. My ancestors all lived to be grumpy old cusses in thier 80's & 90's.

A couple of years ago statistically speaking Mcdonalds was the largest purchaser of cow rectums in the USA. They were the largest purchaser of cows on the hoof and the rectum is included. The rectum is 100% beef :)

"We're vegetarian at our house"

I can understand how bologna could almost do that to a person. But my ancesters didn`t get me here by eating grass and by darn, I ain`t going to graze either. God didn`t give us dominion over the birds, beast, and fish so we could eat greens and beans without some ham and steak to make it go down better.

When I hauled livestock to the packing houses we said that what went in hotdogs and bologna was liver lice and lungs a-holes and tongues....James

Does the term "beaks and butts" mean anything to you?

Anytime a "meat" says made from chicken, beef and pork (cheap hot dogs and the like) dog food is about all its good for. You got the scraps from three differant packing plants ground into one package with a little cereal to give it some taste.

Aloha, Mechanically seperated is when a machine grinds the meat off of the bone so some bone goes with it. The bone is ground up fine so I assume it adds more weight to the meat and makes more money for the plant. YUK! Nothing like the good old days.

The hide goes to the leather processor. Large muscle groups become "steak". Small muscle groups grow up to be "hamburger". Big bones an feet go to the fertilizer plant. What is left? "Meat and meat by-products". Bologna contains ever thang from peckers, lips, poot holes, well you get the picture. Add enough artificial flavoring, coloring, and binders and you got the stuff that poor folks thrive on.

Ya don't wanna know.Eyeballs and all. Now that fat is a no-no they trim the fat a lot closer on the expensive cuts and they don't throw good money down the drain when they can sell it in bologna.I don't eat it anymore. Too greasy for me now.
