Here's the mess that I was telling Ken about yesterday.

Plowed up this sod eight months ago and just am not looking forward to this "bounce" ordeal at all.

But, 'spose I'd better be getting to it pretty darned soon, or it's liable to revert back to "El Natur-ial". :>)

One of my bosses at the farm was telling me that new C-IH and JD row crop tractors have a hydraulic front suspension. Kinda like giant shock absorbers. Sounds like just what you need. He also mentioned it's a $25,000 option. Ouch.

Since that ground will need two times over with the disc do them both at once. Make one through and then only take half of a swath, you tractor will ride so smooth as one set of wheels will be on worked soil.

Allan, Plow off the upper and lower headlands, Then set her up on a easy, very slight angle, Just like plowing lister ridges. You should be OK. Just be glad you don't still have an ol ByCool in the top of your tractor, or it would be "Bath Time Again" LOL!!
Later,
John A.

I once drove an 8430 JD that the farmer had a cultavator mounted on the front to knock down the ridges in front of the wheels it made it ride sweet . you probley could throw something together from spare parts .

Allan, You shoulda spent a little money last fall and rounduped it. That way the sod would be dead and the roots would have had all winter to rot. I do that with my sod, sure makes it work up nice with just two passes with the feild cultivator in the spring. No plowing of any kind needed.

From what I remember of Dad plowing, we usually followed up with the disc... I remember with the 2590 going about 2mph and it seemed to fast on that broken sod! Once with the grain and then once diagonally... then the vibra shank and finally seeding.

Fall plowing gives the frost a chance to break up a lot of the chunks...

Used twisted spikes on the chisel plow a couple of times for breaking sod in the fall. I liked the way it turned out better with the plow.

Sure hope ya ain't got a stones in the old kidneys as that will surely knock them out . I have been waiting for some to work loose after saturday morning on the skidsteer cleaning up the east side of the one field . Took out two big old appel trees bunch of wild cherrys couple of sassyfras trees bunch of other junk because i am tired of getting hit in the head from low hangen braches . Now if i could only lay my hands on a dozer for two days we would gain three or four acres as the rest of the trees are a bit much for the skidsteer .

If you got duals, put them on and the ride will be much smoother. They are right about it being rough only the first time over, and I usually make a second pass from a different angle (cross harrowing) to make it really super smooth.

That shot of the 966 all gussied up with the "new" cab and duals is just about as pretty as it gets. Have fun, and keep the radio tuned to the old country station.

I think that is gonna look real nice after you go over it with the disk once. It's amazing what a winter and some rain will do to mellow it out.

Sure hope so.

This is only the second time in my life that I've followed a plow with the disc; my folks stopped that practice clear back before I even started school in the early fifties.

But, this is/was buffalo grass and tough as an old screen door. Just don't know how else to cut it up.

I hate using a disc on plowed ground, but how's about if I smack 'er once with the disc to knock it down and then run the packer over it on the second pass?

Is one discing gonna be enough to untie it since it sat over winter and all?

I really hate sod!

If we have access to a disc big enough, we like to use that behind the spring plowing before it gets put to corn. Works good on sod, but spring plowing doesn't let it break up like fall plowing does. I don't think you'll have any problems woth the disk. Once over with that and it should be pretty broke up. Might have tufts of dirt and roots yet, most likely anway, but they will be almost completely gone in another year.

We've got a sod field we plowed under last spring, borrowed the neighbor's disc and ran it down twice with that, then once or twice more with our springtooth. Had a bunch of trash building up in the springtooth, but a cultivator with more clearance would have been fine. (didn't have one big enough to go behind the 1855)

It was still a fairly rough ride with the planter, but then we plowed it again last fall and this spring it is far mellower than I have ever seen that field. It has always been chunky as long as i can remember until this year it wokred up really nice with the 1st pass of the spring tooth.

This weekend I picked up a decent but rusty Oliver 245 18' field cultivator for about scrap price, and that should help. I should be able to dig deeper, and in turn make 1 or 2 less passes to get the work done. First thing though, is that I need to replace a few teeth and get the new tach drive put on the 285.

If it doesn't dry up so I can get at it pretty soon, I might need a mower. :>)
