Everyone,

Heard on the radio this morning that the manufacturers have been busy making
tractors capable of speeds in the range
of 45 mph. Since the old law states tractors
cannot exceed 25 mph on our state roads, a new bill is being introduced to bump the speed to 45. Anyone out there have a tractor
capable of that speed?

Tim, Ohio

I'm currently running a Case-IH MX255 with a 16 row planter that sits parallel to the road in transport. It'll go 24 mph down the road, but it's scary when the big bumps come along. That long planter in the back is one heck of a lever. I've learned to read the road and drop down a couple gears when it's not so smooth.

Export Deere 7000 & 8000 tractors to Europe are geared for either 50 or 60KM depending on the Country.

I worked for a guy when I was in college who had tobacco and cattle. He would put the new guy on his tobacco crew on his old gas 530 Case and tell'm where 'granny' was. That was the first case I had ever been on and I was impressed. That old thing would fly. Mark told me he had a speeding ticket some where around the house his dad had gotten years ago. He was taking corn to town in a gravity flow wagon and got clocked doing 37 in a school zone. After taking that old tractor out on the road, I belive it. I have been on several tactors that I was scared to open all the way up. That was the only one that I would not because it was just to fast, the others had loose front ends.

I'm surprised nobody said Fendts!! I know them things will go atleast 35, and saw a few going down a back road at a pretty good clip. I was behind a Big Case MFWD dualed up on all 4 puling a shhit tanker on Staurday, I think it was going about 25 until it got to a hill, then it slowed right down to about 10 MPH.

some of the amish/mennonite folks or at a branch of them rig their tractors to run fast on the road as one post mentioned i think they use a truck rear end on the pto with tractors gear box in neutral then let rearend /pto hook up push them down road weird feeling to be driving along and a tractor pass you had it happen

Dad's got an F-20 with a second transmission gearbox in there. They called it mexican road gear. It's good for about 20mph, which is pretty quick for that tractor.

I grew up working for a farmer who owned a JD 4000. He claimed it would do 40+ with no load behind it. I had followed it in my pickup with his son driving- it pulling a mo/co, my speedo read about 42mph at the fastest, but might have been off a little I guess.

A few years ago, I restored a Super MTA for a friend, we installed a Rocket governor which increased RPMs to around 2700 and it was scarey. I bet it went 35 or more.

I saw a kid on an old band brake Farmall M kick it out of gear on a hill with a loaded silage wagon behind it.I figure he was doing at least 45+,and he was only 1/2 way down the hill standing on the brakes for all it was worth.

Jewish over drive in reply to Mike in Md, 05-09-2007 10:40:03
The old timers called that Jewish over drive. Put it in neutral down a hill. It's not good for the rear ends !!!

There's a guy that runs a JCB near me, pulls a 4x4x8 square baler with it doing custom work. He usually only runs 30-40 with it. The JCB's have air brake connections for the trailer, so they are set up to pull down the road with a load, probably safer than a mid 50's dump truck running down the road loaded...

Yep I have one that will move around that fast. Its a ford 841 with a sherman combo tranny in it. I was clocked one time doing around 40 MPH but I'll never do that again just plain to unsafe to drive one that fast as loose as the steering is on most tractors, plus the brakes never are all that good either

The new tractors that are capable of these speeds are generally things like the JCB(?) and such, built with high road gears to transport grain etc, directly from field to storage,in lieu of trucks.Generally they use large barge or hopper trailers and are set up with tires, brakes and such for safe hiway use,As these rigs are quite expensive and generally"short haul" oriented,I don't think they'll become a common sight on the highways except in harvest season in "grain/bean" country.

Those are pouplar around Wayne county Ohio. Those are no ordinary tractor and are built for the road and do pretty well. I passed one on the highway and it looked and sounded like it was running fairly smoothly along at about 50 MPH ?

Back in the day my family had some sort of wagon they'd hitch behind the Farmal Regular that had a truck rear end that they'd hook to the PTO. Apparently it was pretty quick although nobody knows how quick. I imagine even 15mph on a Farmall Regular would be too fast!

JCB's will clip along about 45 mph. Shoot, the old Friday's would run 60 in high gear. Toro's about 35, Wards ran pretty quick, and the UDLX Minnie's I believe ran 35 mph. Speed is no stranger to farm vehicles...you just gotta be brave enough to drive 'em!

well, I sure as hell am not going to bump up the speed on my old farmall M or even my 4020, because 20 MPH is freakin' plenty.

the new 45 mph speed is for big huge time farmers who want to get there twice as fast and kill a lot of people doing so. (lol)

I write: Quite right too. Little things like welded wheel centres, suspension on front axle. Better brake systems, transmission systems. Just a short list of the design requirements for a higher speed tractor. A very long time ago a man had to walk in front of an infernal combustion car! It is called progress. Which would you prefer to be in front of: Your tractor and a maximum load going down hill in traffic, or a tractor desgned for just that duty?

Exactly! Much as I love living in a farming community, I don't think I want to be on the road when tractors are pulling 20,000lb. loads of sileage at those speeds. Stopping on command seems like it may be a bit of a problem.

NO schitt! When your kid is standing out in the middle of the road and a tractor comes barreling down the road with 20,000 pounds of silage at 40 mph, lets just say you're gonna wish tractors NEVER existed!

Most new tractors have a 40 km/h road gear option but that is only like 25 mph. Mine will only do 18 mph.

I pulled a grain cart around for a farmer using an Case/IH STX325, in high gear it would best at about 22mph. That was more than fast enough for something of it"s size with no suspension. I usually kept it around 18mph, it didn"t feel so loose...
