I bought an International 584 the other day, made in Dorcester, England. I intended to replace the warped right rear wheel dish, paint it and then resell it. But after driving it for a few days now I am thinking seriously of keeping it. The problem is, I can"t justify owning another tractor. I already have a very reliable Case 831C, with 60 of the strongest horses I ever saw under the hood. So I"m in a quandary about which one to sell, and thought I might ask you guys for some advice. We have 35 acres to keep up, mostly bushogging, plowing, and occasionally pulling a downed oak tree out of the woods for firewood. So either tractor would do just fine for our needs. The Case has pulled tree trunks over 3 feet in diameter and 20 feet long up to the house. It only has about 200 hours on the motor rebuild, decent tires, one good brake, no smoke, minor drips, no dents or rust. What I don"t like about it is the hydraulic clutch. It"s either fully in or fully out, no way to gradually transfer power from motor to drivetrain like in conventional plate type clutches. The Int. 584 is about 10 fewer horses, but has a windowless cab, great brakes, conventional clutch, easier shifting, especially from forward to reverse, and no mechanical issues that I"ve been able to find, plus the power steering works much smoother than on the Case. I"ve already had some difficulty finding parts for the Case. So, looking to the months and years to come, which tractor do you guys think I ought to keep? I would appreciate your honest thoughts on the matter.

It sounds (CASE)like you have already made (CASE) up your mind (CASE), but personally I/we had excellent service (CASE) from our 830 which was the (CASE) same as yours. You'll have (CASE) to to make your own (CASE) decision. Keeping both sounds like a good plan to me.

I cut my teeth on an old 730 eagle hitch and have also had a 830, 930, and a 1030CK all of mine were dual range I am assuming your"s is a case-0-matic. They are good old tractors, but they are just that OLD. I"d keep the IH if it is big enough to do what you want.

I'd take the International over the Case anyday.

I would keep the 584, but I am prejiduce. I have one that I bought new in 1980. It is one if not the best tractor in that class that I have ever been on. They will amaze you on what they will pull. It has a lift that will raise the tractor off the ground if something is to heavy to lift. You will find that on a dyno it will beat the rated 52 HP by 8 to 10 HP in most cases. These have standard features that were options on most other tractors at that time. Parts are available from front to back for them. I told you I am prejiduce.

Thanks for the feedback. Question: Isn't the lever to the left of the seat, the one closest to the seat, the lever that allows you to go go from high range to low range, with the inside position being high? I notice that pushing this lever down when it's in the slot closest to me puts the tractor in high range forward, but pulling it all the way up does not put the tractor in reverse. I have to get out of that slot and go to the outside slot and pull the lever up to get in reverse. So it appears that the high range reverse does not work. What do you think?

High range reverse is locked out on all 584/585 and 68x 78x machines I've been on. Both the type with the slot shifters and the type with the more normal levers.

It is pretty common for the transfer nubbin to wear so the switch from the high-neutral-low fork is dropped in neutral or low when you head for the switch over to the reverser fork. I often would be stuck in low and have to bang the mechanism from underneath or fish a screwdriver down in to line the forks up again.

Could probably add another lever to have high range reverse.

I have used and worked on a 584 and 585 for years now and the 2wd model is one of the most reliable and useful tractors around. We had problems with the ZF front axle and shifter on the 4wd model but it still worked well for 6000+ hours on it.
