300 Utility and Lo-Boy 185 questions/trade?

I've got a 185 Lo-Boy(1975, if I recall correctly), 5'deck, 3pt. and loader. The loader I is mounted, but I haven't used it. The tractor is in good shape, not beat up, starts/runs well, all tires 90%(also loaded). The only problem is that it needs a new clutch kit for the pto.

A guy wants to trade me his '55 300 utility. It starts/runs well. The tach seems to work(bounces up & down a lot) but none of the other gauges work. The tin is all there but kind of rough. It has a home-made hand trip loader. Tires are poor but usable. Home-built adapter in the hitch(2pt to 3pt).

The torque amplifier doesn't seem to work. There is resistance when you move the handle, but isn't it supposed to 'snap' in to position? The speed of the tractor doesn't change when you move it. I haven't operated a torque amplifier unit, so I'm not sure how it is supposed to perform.

The pto does not work. When you move the lever one way, the shaft won't turn. When you move it the other way, you can spin it by hand. Are the torque amplifier and the pto somehow connected? There is a growling noise when doing this.

Reverse doesn't work. It will start to back up, maybe a few feet, then start grinding like it's kicked partially out of gear.

So, roughly, how much $, how much work to fix the utility? What would be a fair trade? Would it be swap straight across? Or money added on one side or the other?

Thanks,

Anthony Nubel

I have a 300u and like it. But that would be a very bad trade for you. I think $3000 would be a low estimate if somebody else did the mechanical work. I bought a 300U in better shape than that, for 1800 and proceeded to drop 5000 into it. It is very easy to do that!

Don't walk but run away from that deal. Your looking at $1000-3000 to fix that 300U. Like it is now it might be worth $500 at best if even that much

I would want to make that trade too...If I were the other guy!! Sounds like a load of work needed on that 300 tractor. Compared to the little bit yours needs. Unless you are desperate to part with yours and have to have that 300 I would look elsewhere!
