Continentel F-124 Camshaft

Gentlemen:

I am trying to help a friend with a Continental F-124 engine, (which happens to be in an older Clark fork lift), but the style was also popular in some tractors I believe.

A little history first, several years ago someone rebuilt this engine, and after boring, used Chrysler pistons I'm told. This part appears OK, with the flat topped pistons coming flush with the top of the block at TDC. The engine was not reassembled for a few years and now that it is back together and running the following is observed.

What happens during operation, idle is somewhat normal, but when increasing the RPM, the engine labors and you can actually see the atomized fuel coming out the intake of the carburetor and the engine not developing much rpm or power.

Items done so far, two distributors, one being freshly rebuilt, different carburetors, various timing settings, to achieve max rpm, but still same problem. Checked and set the valve lash as to specs. Removed the gear cover and checked the timing marks on the cam and crank gears, OK.

Compression about 100 psi/cyl. All this leads me to think either this has the wrong camshaft installed or there is a problem with the camshaft.

Checked the valve operation with the head removed and noticed that the exhaust valves closed about TDC, but the intake does not begin to open until the piston has moved down about 1/4 to 3/8" inch, appears to vary per cylinder.

There appears to not be any overlap of the exhaust to intake valves as is normally observed on most newer engines.

I'm trying to located any information on these camshafts, the lift and duration and opening degrees, this data does not appear to be listed in the overhaul manual. Can anyone help me locate this data? I'm beginning to run low on other possibilities for these problems.

Don, Many of the older ind engines did not have any
overlap in the cam grind. None of the major after-
market suppliers have a cam listed or I could get you the specs, I looked all the way back to a
73 trw book. Symptoms sound like tight intake valves ( but you have been there ), my continental sheet says
cold set .016 and .018 . Also poor seating of the
intake valves or exhaust lobes worn short.Worn
ex lobe will usually run well at idle but at hi
rpm the cylinder can't get rid of all the exhaust.

George: Thanks for checking for specs on this camshaft. Looks like I"ll be checking for a camshaft for replacement. I was not aware of the exhaust lobe problem and the condition I"m experiencing.

dont know if this will help...I understand older Jeeps used Continental engines, with some guys finding bargain engines for their Jeeps at older forklift dealers. Perhaps some of the Jeep guys can help. From what you tell us, it sure sounds like a cam, the fuel reversion above the carb sure seems like low or no vacuum.
