I took the centre cover nut off the wheel, set a wheel puller into the centre threaded pipe fitting, and hooked the claws to the underside of the wheel mount. But instead of lifting the wheel, the puller split that centre threaded pipe fitting open. Anybody ever pulled a wheel off?

I was told by a JD mechanic that you should never beat the post if it is a model with power steering.

I guess this is not much help now, but if the nut would have been backed off, but left on the end of the shaft it may have prevented your problem.
