Hi

With the tisco sleeve/piston sets do the ring gaps usually need to be adjusted or are they gapped properly at the factory? (this is for a farmall c123)

Thanks!

Mark D.

I think that is already done for you at the factory. The pistons with the rings installed are already installed in the sleeves. Of course that piston needs to be removed from the sleeve in order for both to be installed in the engine block, so be sure that each piston and ring set goes back into the same sleeve that it came out of. Sure wouldn't hurt to check a few of them though.

I thought only the JD factory wet sleeves were the only ones pre assembled ? On these you are not to pull them out ! you just pull them down enough to hook up the rod. I did a farmall C with a tisco kit and it was all seperate ? Everything went together fine right out of the boxes, clearance was preset.

Rusty, alot of people I know install both together. All you do is drop it down in, line rod up with crank and done. All the rings are lined up, why remove and realign again? Doug N

How do you get the connecting rod attached to the piston without removing the piston from the sleeve?

By not pulling the piston all the way out, just enough to get pin in, and keep rings in. Doug N

My tisco set came with the rings still sealed in a cellophane bag. I had to put the rings on the piston myself.

What I'm really interested in is personal experiences with the tisco sleeve/piston sets. Whether or not you had to adjust the ring gaps when you installed them, if they were bigger than factory spec, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the info.

I'm familiar with adjusting ring gaps but I am curious if they come set from the factory.

A local well respected engine machine shop told me that on most rebuild sleeve/piston combinations that they are pretty much identical between sleeve piston sets now days due to the automated machinery doing the honing and machining processes.

I've installed a few Tisco kits and I have never had to adjust the ring gap in fact I have never had to adjust ring gap on any engine kit. I always check them tho.

With any set you have to check the ring gap for each cylinder...that is start at the front of engine put the ring set in the sleeve check it, then adjust the gap if needed then that ring set is used only for that cylinder, then go to the next cylinder and pick another ring set and match that set.....so on and so forth. hence you end up with a matched set for each cylinder. same thing for the pistons, you need to check them also...hence again you end up with a piston, ring and cylinder that has the perfect tolerances....each one...I'm not an expert but thats how I understand it.
