OT Painting trees that have been pruned??

Sorry folks for the OT post but the wealth of knowledge here is so vast....

Since Hurricane Rita almost 2 years ago I have several older established Oak trees on a fence line that have sprouted a bunch of limbs on their trunks, almost all of the way down to the ground. This is creating a problem in mowing close to fence line. If I cut these offending limbs off I am afraid they will just re-sprout, maybe worse than before. Is there anything that I can apply to the newly cut places that will stop this from happening. And while I am asking why did this happen in the first place? Only one of these trees suffered any storm damage.

Thanks to all,

Logan in Southeast Texas

I prune all my trees flush. Maples, Oaks, Cherry, Ornamental pear/plum, honey locust, varying spruces.

I have around 1700 trees right now.

Certain species will develop sprouts again, easier than others. Mainly the plums. Don't use paint or underbody rustproofing, prune-seal or anything like that. Let it heal naturally.

All this info has come from working with my local extension and another tree farmer in the area.

I have not had problems to this point. Disease, dying anything like that. Have been following this for about 5 years now.

Good luck.
Rick

Check with county extension office. I think they now recomend leaving collar, not flush. No paint @ don't prune oak while green unless you have to. Led

Nothing your can do about the sprouting or resprouting after a limb is cut. If you trim it a couple of times it usualy stops.

Sometimes sprouting on a trunk is an indication that the top is dieing but in your case its probly just because of the storm damage.

Cut the limbs off flush with the trunk and according to the the college professors there is no need to paint, the tree will secret substance to seal. If you leave a stump they will send out suckers from the nodes that are left.
