My parents have a farmette that borders our main farm. The tenants moved out in June so the house is currently empty. I went up last night to mow and found someone had picked the pears off all 3 trees! They must have brought a ladder cause they even got the ones 10 ft up. Pissed me off pretty good... The house is surrounded by development, and we are there every evening working so someone must have a pretty big set to pull off something like that...

Reminds me of a story Orion Samuelson was telling a while back. A large sweetcorn grower was being crowded by development. A friend of his was a plumber I believe it was. Anyway, they were working in the development next door to the farm and the house across the street from where they were working had sweetcorn for sale. He went over and asked where they got it. The guy said "right out behind here"!! Now THAT takes nerve.

I've got 2 pear trees, it's tough to eat em all, so I give some away, but yeah it would be courteous to ask, like someone said, they are in season, go see if you can find some locally, you'll forget about those idiots, what comes around goes around, most thieves usually deal with something, you may never hear anything about it, but I've always thought that was true, many things happen for a reason, still a crappy thing to do, I do enjoy mine every year just the same, if someone did that, I'd be a little annoyed too, don't lose any sleep over it though, some people just have no common sense at all.

I don't why you are complaining I have four pear trees and I can't find enough people who want them. Tried selling them at the local farmer's market sold two I think. Mostly they just feed the cows and the horse or rot on the ground.

Wouldn't hurt to ask the last tenants would it? Have they picked them before?

The tenants moved 3 states away so we know it wasnt them. What really scares me is a have a barn on the property that isnt lockable and it has a lot of tools in it... My tools will probably disappear and there will be pieces of pears in their place....

Now I'm sure they didn't think they were stealing ! If they were crooks they for sure would of got the tools . easier pickings and a larger market to sell. Now you better go over and get those tools yourself before someone else does !!!!! !!!!! !!!!

A lock only keeps an honest man out or honest.

With that many Pears, go to your local Farmers Market to see who's selling bushels of pears.

What really surprizes me is that someone would go to all that work to "steal" pears ? Not the work of a theif ! They are too lazy ! More likely someone thought you wouldn't use them so they thought rather than go to waste they would pick them.

Mike, your story sounds pathetically stupid, but still not surprising...

How about this: some woman had her 10 foot blow-up pool stolen from her backyard... EVEN THE WATER... the ground was NOT wet the next morning.

Doesn't surprise me one one bit. I had an old lady that lived out back of my place. She and her brother would sit on the porch and watch me work my a$$ off all spring in my garden and small orchard....never offer to lend a hand. But sure as the crops got ripe..here they'd come begging. now, I don't mind sharing some of the bounty, but at least allow me to offer it first! One day she comes asking for blackberries....I have about 75 feet of thornless BB set out. I said...sure, pick some. Note the word SOME. So help me, they stripped the vines! Needless to say....she never got any more. Parasites are wherever you find them and being what they are....they are greedy. last year, my peach trees were loaded and I have one that is my favorite....came in one evening and it was stripped to the bone.

Nothing is beyond the imagination concerning these bottom feeders!

A few years ago, I told a neighbor she could pick some cherry tomatoes. She called all her relatives, they stripped every plant bare, even the green ones... A few things like that are the reason I quit planting a garden..

I had an older house that I needed to paint but didn't quite have the time. Using a reference from a local church I hired a legal immigrant to do the job. Told him he could have some peaches from the trees on the property...got home to find every peach from all 4 trees in the front yard gone.

At least they didn't burn the house down when they left.

Nothing surprises me anymore. It just seems as if the majority of people have no respect for their neighbor anymore. Really more sad than disgusting. probably only get worse to.
