Hooked the tractor on the baler in the yard last evening so I could get a good start on baling that last field, soon's I got home from the substitute teaching job this afternoon. Went put a can of gas in the tank, noticed the SMV sign laying on the ground behind the tractor, then noticed seat pushed way up under the steering wheel. Battery box is under the seat on this JD B. Yup, they had slipped in the yard sometime between last evening and this afternoon and swiped the battery. Tractor had been converted to 12v, so it could have been used in someone's car.
Area where tractor was parked was probably 75 feet away from the road, very near one of two mercury vapor yard lites, so it took some (round spherical things) to drive into yard and swipe it. Called the sheriff, and a deputy came out and took a report. Probably will go into a file on computer, never to be seen again. Meanwhile, I got to buy about $50 worth of new battery. Old one had several years on it, but was still good, not planning to have to replace it this soon. Gonna have to do something. Son wants to use that tractor this weekend for his getaway car from his wedding. He got it from his late great uncle, and granddad, and restored it. He wants to use it in recognition of those loved ones in the family who have gone on before.

Here people wouldnt have screwed with your battery. They would have gone home and came back with pliers and wrenches and torn every wire and copper part out of the tractor.

Putting a borrowed battery from another vehicle in it temporarily, will be taking it out at nite. Will be more careful to park tractor in direct view of bedroom window! Tractor will soon be in storage, as will not be needed for the fall/winter!

Someone could be selling it out of a cheap hotel room in vegas. Go get some thugs and go in after it. Stealing a battery really isn't that much of an offense, but it's the feeling of being violated that puts the knot in the stomach. Whoever did it knows something about John Deeres if they knew how to slide the seat ahead. Jim

Well Ray,ya got the sheriff part right. This is Montcalm County. I left the 2-135 in the field with the chopper last nite. Hope that's all there when I get down there this morning. Remembered I left the key in it.

Friend of mine used to tell the story about how the fuel pump went out on his pickup as he was crossing the reservation up in South Dakota.

Had to walk into town to get a new pump and by the time he got there, the battery out of his pickup was already there ahead of him settin' in the store window with a sign on it that read, "Used battery for sale". :>)

I had a battery taken from my JD 5020 a few years back. I guess they only needed one, because they left one. That is why I don,t like to park anything along a road. Stan

Ray, we are living in a crucial time.. Soon, it is going to be a battle between the haves and have-nots. I don't have a lot, but I do think I should have the right to keep what I do have.. What really makes my blood boil, are the people that say "If you left it outside, you deserve to get it stolen" Just last week, I heard that from someone, when I mentioned that someone tried to cut a lock off of a trailer at our shop.. That attitude is an example of what is wrong with our country today..

If someone needed a battery that bad, and came and asked me, heck, I would give them one, or help them get one.. But stealing one is about as sorry as a person can get..

What is the price being paid on junk batteries in your area? Often they will steal agood high priced battery and sell it to junk dealer for a few dollars. It pays to check with a junk dealer, sometimes you can find some of those good batteries at a low price.Could be your own.Try marking them to identify if found.

Bad part about it is if you catch them and bust a cap on their butts you will the one going to jail not them. Criminals and immagrants from a country south of us have more rights the the common Joe.

Round here you won't find a stolen battery, not whole any way. One of the local recipies for nazi dope uses auto batteries insted of lithioum. Crank heads will take any thing not nailed down, even more so if it is somthing that they need to cook thier meth. They get real balzy in the spring steal'n NH3.

Interesting, I had never heard of folks using battery acid to make drugs. Theres gonna be a whole lot of people dying young if they are doing drugs with all this awful stuff in it.

$50 and that isn't even for a better battery. I had to replace the one in my pickup a couple of months ago when it went bad and it cost me $75. People are swiping more and more as costs continue to rise. Probably was stolen while you were gone. Something like that would only take a few minutes to take.
Sorry to hear of your loss.

Have had same problems. Just talked to my sister back in Nebraska couple days ago. Got a better story than yours. Have a couple trucks at the farm, one is a 66 GMC half ton, the other is a 63 Chevy grain truck. Someone took the passenger side doors off both. Our renter is going to look quite cute hauling grain to town in the 2 ton with no door.
