Hi my finacee just bought a Fordson Major Tractor Today. He has a bill of sale but has no idea what year this thing was made etc. There is a number behind the frame infront of the motor and it was T1 then below it H28C and rear gear box under the seat was EIADKN 994787 T1 J8C and there was number on the head of the motor DDNFF2. If anyone could please tell me what year this was? or any information i can find about it or if there is a good website to go to please let me know. He is driving me crazy trying to find stuff and i don't know a thing about tractors HAHAH. I'm just a girl hahaha. If there is any more numbers somewhere he needs to find to help I will tell him to look.. Thanks for anyone that can help me. I TRULY appreciate it... He got it for a really good deal. :) LEE

FORDSON MAJOR dating in reply to LEE G, 09-27-2007 16:32:20
Lanse gave the serial numbers for the 1945-51 Fordson E27N Major.
DIESEL MAJOR 1952-1960 serial numbers:-
start number each year
1952-1217101
1953-1247381
1954-1276857
1955-1322525
1956-1371418
1957-1412409
1958-1458381
1959-1494448
1960-1538065
The serial number used by Ford was the engine number which can be found on small tin plate on engine side of battery firewall. The engine number will be stamped into a small flat block on the left rear side of engine by the starter motor up to March 1956; and on front right of cylinder block after March 1956.
Engines did get changed in service, so the engine serial number may not be the same as the actual tractor number.
Only way to date tractor is by casting codes on engine block, gearbox, rear axle. These are raised numbers and usually very similar to each other because the castings were used quickly.
H28C = June 28th 1959 & J8C = July 8th 1959.
So based on these numbers your tractor would be built in early July 1959.
The E1ADKN & E1ADDN are the starting letters of the Fordson Major parts for example
E1ADKN-5230-A is the exhaust muffler.
Hope this helps you.
David

awesome i think that did help explain a lot. so more likely his tractor is a 1959? I will have himn look for the raised letters on the tin and see if he can find them. :) great I take it manuals are pretty easy to get for these things, cuz i came acrossed a page of manuals. He is excited to get this thing rolling hahaha. he sold his nice john deere so he could have money to start building a house and came acrossed this tractor for 600.00 so sounds like he got a good deal. Maybe even a collector?? any more info from anyone would be appreciated. thanks a million.. Lee

I think those are the serial numbers at the beginning of the production year. Take a look also on the firewall against the fuel tank, beside the battery compartment. That's where the serial is on later model Majors.

My first guess would be the slightly earlier E27N model Major, pre 1953. You might have more success on the Fordson Discussion Board.
Take some pics so we can see!
Good luck with the new machine.
