Yes and No. If your tank is inside, then gelling shouldn't be a problem. As others have said, filtering is key. Bio tends to swell the seals that dino tends to shrink. My guess is that is what happened to that other furnace.. BTU's are almost identical between Bio and Dino. Bio also has much higher cleaning ability, so a dirty, marginal system may plug up after all the gunk grom the tank and lines is loostened up. My main concern would be algee. Most Bio has the glycerin removed, helping with any groth problems. If straight veggie oil is left for a long period it can start to grow algee or go rancid. So if you fill the tank and it sits for 6 months or so befor a refill I would recommend AGAINST it, but if you fill the tank every 3 months or less, then you should have no problems at all. If your tank is outside, I wouldnt suggest using Bio until spring unless you also add an anti-gell product...at 1 1/2 normal strength to the Bio. I am looking into converting my whole farm over to Bio I grow and process myself, so anybodys thoughts would be welcome to me too. Mikethird party image

I just brought quite a bit of used oil to the recycling center. They have an older gentleman monitoring the dumping of the oil and he asked what is in the oil. I said old oil was in the oil containers and asked what else would be in the used oil. He said that some people dump old gas and paint thinners and carb cleaner in the oil and that the recycle center sold the used oil for heating oil. He said that it is fine to put old cooking oil in the used oil container along with the used motor oil but they could not use it if it had any brake fluid, gas, diesel, carb cleaner, thinner or antifreeze in it. So it looks like you can mix the two and have good results.

The recycle center sells it to a oil processor who evidently subjects it to a filtering process before selling it as heating oil. I don't know what other additives they might put in or how they may blend it with processed heating oil.

I have a customer who has a small resturaunt, and rather than paying to get rid of his frier oil he started to add it to his 300 gal oil tank in his basement. Now he did filter it and it was clean, but after a year the mixture turned more veggie than fuel oil and when I got there to service it for winter he had burned thru the fire pot and had started to destroy the heat exchanger. If you burn the veggie ( which I think is a good idea) you may need to run a smaller nozzel to compensate for the higher temp and output.

I know a man who runs a few semis and he has run used veggy oil in them. Biggest problem I see is that it tends to get solid at low temps so you would need your tank to be in the basement and then many it would need to be heated. Better do some research better than here first.

I have never personally used it as heating oil, but when I use it in my truck, I filter it through a 2 micron filter, heat it up in an old hot water heater and pour it straight in the tank. I have a pump that pumps it through the heater. I dont use too much in the winter, maybe 5 gallons per fillup, but my fuel cost are down over the year, and most of the setup I use for this was free.
