Early ('65 to end of March '68) had a 233 cubic inch engine, rated at 57 h.p. April '68 thruogh '75 used a 256 engine rated at 67 h.p., although I've heard that late production models were upped to 70 h.p. SOS-equipped models were rated about 2 h.p. less. (these are all PTO h.p. figures)

Easy way to tell early and late. Early = steel grill, late = plastic grill.

When I was a kid the neighbor had two. The later one, I thought he said was 71hp. Could I be wrong and be remembering the year instead? I thought the other was 67???

Could have been the 71 HP had the blower while the 67 HP did not. Not sure how much difference the blower did make.

The 10 speed is an SOS transmision, I had the 8 speeds in 2 4000 and 1 5000, Would not have owned a SOS tractor.

The 4000 is a 52 HP tractor and the 5000 is larger. Earlier had a smaller engine and later had a larger engine and was rated about 67 HP and could have a blower added and that would make more power yet
