How many would come to a plow day?

I've been thinking about hosting a plow day sometime on our small farm, maybe 30-35 acres to plow in a typical year, 20 of which are on the main farm.

It's something I think would be fun, and it could probably be done any time in October as lately we've been done with chopping in Septemer or early October at the latest. I'd even let people hook to one of our plows if they would want to try it out.

I migh also try to find a local tractor club to help organize it, as I know it'd be a big undertaking.

You name the date and I will be there. I don't have a plow nor do I have 3 point but I would be willing to come and try to "play" as much as I can do.

I even have a little 2 bottom trailer plow, think it's a little wonder. Not sure how wide it is but it was a good load for our Massey 165...

I want to shine that one up too but I've got my hands full just trying to get the 3 bottom shined up again and get everything else done. The 4 bottom's tire just went flat today after I just had it replaced this season with an actual implement tire. And it's about 5 miles away, the farthest little peice I had to plow. I had to unhook just so I could get home to go to work. Go figure...

I love plow days. The ones I've been to, the host provided lunch. I was at another and we had a great time.

Later, I found out that the plow day was to prepair a field for CRP program planting.

Would have been nice if the host sent some money our way to cover our costs the program paid 75% of the going rate for machine time. These sour grapes are strictly my own. because there was Gov. $$$ left on the table.

You'll find all will have fun.

"If you have it, they will come." Antique tractor guys love to plow. If I had the land, I would do it every year. Went to one yesterday- about 25 tractors showed up. I've never seen so many poorly set-up plows, but a good time was had by all! Next Saturday is another- I expect 60-70 tractors at that one. The weekend after, a group of friends will be plowing up a bunch of corn ground. I've never been offered any fuel, and I probably wouldn't take it anyway. Food is all anyone expects, and it's a lot cheaper than doing the tillage yourself. I'm just happy someone lets me plow their dirt.

We have a plowing day scheduled for this Saturday in Iowa. An event like this is usually very popular. It is kind of late this year and I'm concerned that the cold weather will keep some of the people home. We have up to 100 acres that can be plowed but I think this is way too many acres for this time of year. In August we have to limit everyone and the number of bottoms because plowing is so popular.

To answer where I'm from, I'm just South of Kaukauna. We actually border the city on the south side, and the property west of us was annexed a couple years ago too.

Kaukauna is about 1/2 hr. South of Green Bay, and 45minute-1 hr. North of Fond du lac. I really don't even know of any clubs in the imediate area, but there is an HPOCA chapter in Baraboo. That's quite a ways away for a plow day though.

Not sure what I would even be able to do for food. If 30 people showed up, I for sure wouldn't be able to feed all of them.

2008 will be our 10th year. Like was mentioned, don't sell anything. Provide a free meal. Invite colletors in your area and they will come. Be safe and have fun.

What some do in IA. is book the lunch wagon that is usually at the nearby auctions. That seems to work ok.

had one in my area yesterday,I did not attend but from what heard you have to have free food to get anything at all, just like your seed meetings etc anymore you have to supply free meals to get any attendence. I thought about one last season combined with my seed days. Yu have to figure food costs, make sure you check your liability ins and you will probably have to also furnish fuel to fill the tractors before they leave. Have fun.

Your existing farm liability should be all you need as long as you are not selling anything or charging admission. Charging admission, etc. makes it a commercial venture and you would need special event coverage. That coverage is available through most companies, but generally has a minimum premium of $1,500 or so.

Donovan,

There were 7 tractors that pulled a total of 19 bottoms.

Where are you at? I may be interested in attending.

Donovan,

Here is a pic of our first plowday. A group of local guys got together and plowed 30 acres in about 9 hrs, with a lunch break and lots of stops to B.S. & Brag! Was not publicized just invited some that we new. Several trailered in from as far as 30 miles. It was great fun! I had posted this very same topic on here about 6 weeks ago. I recieved some very good suggestions. I would like to hold one next year with an open invite and even ask the local FFA if they would be interested in cooking/selling food. Ours was held the 2nd Sat. in October. It was right along state highway 49 between Brandon and Waupun WI. There just happened to be an auction 3 miles down the road that same day. MAN you should have seen the brake lights and rubber neckers that day!

Put one together for your area! Even if only a few get together it was still a good time!!

Hmmm, looks like there's even some poo on the ground... That's a good thing to know that some guys wouldn't mind getting some on their tires because we just about always haul manure before we do the fall tillage.

The "local" FFA is a ways away- although there are some 4-H clubs, including the one I used to be a part of.

Hi, Don. I went to one yesterday, by Coal Valley, Ill. They had 2 card tables set up for food, a lp grill and some coolers. Sandwich and pie and cookies etc. I didn't get there till about 2 pm, and there were about 10 tractors plowing. May have been more there in the morning, don't know for sure. Edwards River club put it on. Not sure about Insurance needs, just need to get the word out in the surrounding area and have signs so you can find the place. I wish someone would have one close to home so I could drive tractor to it, Would love to go and play in the dirt. Google Edwards River Antique tractors and look for 2006 plow day at Coal Valley and look at last years pictures. That's me on the 77. I'd do it if I had some land to plow, all mine is HEL, so can't plow anything. Chris
