I'm rebuilding an IH 706 with the 282 diesel and I was wondering what type of oil I should use.

Thanks

Old IH mechanics have always recommended to us that we should use the straight 30 weight oil, but we have been running 15w-40 (along with most everyone) for many years without a problem. Our local dealer no longer carries the 30 weight due to the increased cost vs. the multi-weight oil.

Myself, I prefer the Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40 for everything...

You may want to consider a good break in oil for the first 50 hours of use. It is formulated to let all the moving parts seat in you don't have oil consumpion,or blow by problems later down the road. Deere makes a good break in oil,I don't know if Case/IH has a similar oil or not. After break in, a good grade of 15-40 should work well unless you are in a very cold climate then a 5w-40 synthetic will work.Make sure it is a diesel rated oil. That is a flat tappet engine and you have to be carefull what oil you run now or the possibility of a wiped cam or lifter failure may result. The oil companies have removed the zinc from their blends to meet emission requirements. Definetly do not run 10-40 or 1-30 automotive oil in it

MSM, you are right on the money. Good recommendation. Mobil 1 now makes a 5W40 synthetic diesel oil, available at Wally World. I emailed their engineering department and ask about this new oil versus the Mobil Delvac One. They said exactly the same forumla, in different packaging. Tom

I have a question..... having driven IH diesels for 45 years, and asking numerous IH block men years ago, I never found ONE who would approve 15w-40 oil in a 706. When did that change? I suspect it was after IH ceased to exist. Their answer to me was always use 30 wt.

"I never found ONE who would approve 15w-40 oil in a 706. When did that change?"

Probably changed when multigrade oils increased in quality. 30 years ago continuous high heat would break down a multigrade to its base property - specifically 15-40W became straight 15W. Today's multigrades - especially those that are designed for heavy use don't break down nearly so fast and can withstand much higher heat levels for longer durations. This is especially true with sythetics.

Just like 30 years ago you couldn't use deterginated oil in small "splash lube" engines because it would cause foam. Today's deterginated oils don't foam up like they used to.

I'm not gonna preach what brand, but any good 15w-40 that's rated for diesel use.
