Well the gas tank on my 1980 Chev has been leaking for the last 6 months or so. Well I ordered a brand new tank for it and picked it up today. Now heres the good or bad part. I have taken a can of spray under coating and sprayed the tank, and plan to spray one more coat on it tomorrow, then take an old tractor inner tube and cover the whole tank other then where the wires/line comes out. So is this a good idea or a bad one. What do you guys think??

You might make some mud/rock flaps out of the now-rejected rubber.

Changed so many of those, can't count that high.

Almost everyone we changed leaked from the strap area or under the front shield. Rocks would get wedged in there and start rubbing. Combine that with good old Michigan salt trucks in the winter, and holes magically appear.

On flat beds we left the tank open. Just made sure had good mud flaps on each side to stop the rocks. Looked a little funny having a flap in front of the tank, but seemed to help the life of the tank.

Worst problem I ever had with a pickup bed rusting was when I decided to protect it with a bed liner. It holds the moisture in, and so would the inner tube around your gas tank. Do the under coating, then, as Dad used to say, "Quit while times is good."

I beleive the gas gause sending unit is located just below the gap between the cab and box, or directly below the drain holes in the front of the cab. Water will pool up right on it and that gasket, if it was even installed right from the factory, will deteriorate and allow water into the tank. Not sure if that is your issue with the first one or not. Make darn sure that seal is good on that sending unit assembly, a few beads of silicone smeared in wont hurt. Very common problem on the trucks. Also is a common cause of rough running, that water does get in there, and will cause rough running cause of the water in the gas. Undercoat the tank, for get the rubber, but make sure that sending unit is sealed!!

Yep you have the placement of the sending unit sort of right. On my truck I have a flat bed so its right out in the open. The old tank started to leak where the back mount sits under the tank. I get rocks etc. off the front and rear tires in that area and thats why I was thinking about the inner tube to keep the rocks from hitting the tank and putting hole in it. I pull tractors out of places off and on that I have to use the 4 wheel drive and do that throws rocks at time and causes problems with stuff building up on the tank which is also right out in the open

You got 27 years out of tank #1. That seems like a reasonable lifespan. I'd install it just like #1 was. Another 27 and anyone named OLD should be REAL OLD by then;)

Old isn't because I'm old its because of where I learned thing from. Old people and I learned to keep my mouth shut and ears open when I was young and learned a lot that way. In 27 years I would still be less then 80 years old but very close

why did'nt you just buy a plastic replacement tank, I put one on a 1978 chevy and havent had any problems with it, Looks just like the factory steel one just made out of plastic.

#1 couldn't find one, #2 because it sits under my flat bed and can be hit a lot by rocks etc.

Ford pickup tanks rust through- only where the straps go...hold the dirt and moisture...like that rubber would do.

Just use the undercoat.

Use only the rubber on the straps

I dont like the sound of that wrapping in rubber, the moisture will still condense n be trapped inside between it n the tank and no air flow to dry it out. Id rather just use the rubber for protection at the strapping interface.

Gosh.I think I would install it exactly like the first one. That lasted 27 years. If it fails after the next 27 years that will be the least of your worries.

Rich,
Undercoating is good.Wrap it in rubber, only if it is lubricated latex.

I'd use the undercoating idea, but forget the inner-tube.You'll never get it sealed on top and all the crap(salt, sand, moisture)will gather and never dry out. They always rust out where the straps are anyways. If anything, use a thick tar paper in between straps and tank. ~brad

I would stop with the undercoating old. The tube may hold moisture and rot the tank early. I do think the undercoating is a good idea though.

if it leaks in the future the gas may eat a hole in the rubber, also if there are any spots not sealed good, water could get trapped and cause it to rust faster

Old , you have always given me good advice on most of my mechanical problems with my tractors but I don't believe I'd use that rubber. Just doesn't seem like a good idea.
