I was just thinking that 20 years ago or so, there was a ton of stuff made in Japan like cameras, electronics, toys, tools, and of course cars too. Go into almost ANY store today in ANY department and you'd have a hard time finding ANYTHING made in Japan. My question is, other than cars (and even a lot of the Japanese cars are made on this continent), what is are the big manufacturers in Japan making these days for the world market?

The VIN on a vehicle will tell you where it was constructed. The first character in a VIN indicates the country of origin.

J = Japan
1 = USA
2 = Canada
3 = Mexico (most VW VIN's start with 3)
4 = USA
W = Germany
Y = Sweden

I don't remember the country codes for Great Britain, France or China. It's interesting to see how many Toyota and Nissan VIN's start with 1 instead of J.

You can find out a lot of info about cars and trucks from the VIN. If you do a google search for "VIN codes" you'll probably find out a lot.

Looked at a SONY DVD player yesterday. On the box said MADE IN CHINA.

Even the Japanese are outsourcing to China nowadays.

Some of the finest tools are made in Japan; example, fine handsaws that cut on pull stroke rather than push stroke, sometimes call "Shark". Some of the finest kitchen knives. Lot of high quality industrial equipment. Japanese stuff is utlra high, even better than Germany, and Americans are reluctant to spend the money to get quality, rather go to Wally World and load up on China junk. Tom

Yep, I have a several Japanese hand tools, and I've bought my wife some excellent kitchen knifes. All from Japan Woodworker out of Alameda, CA. I particularly like their japanese water stones. They also carry a number of high-end American and European tools, such as Lie-Neilson planes from Maine.

Good point.

What's interesting is in NASCAR racing, there are Fords, Chevys, Dodges, and Toyotas racing. And Toyotas are the only ones made in the U.S.

The Chevys are made in Canada and the Fords and Dodges in Mexico.

You are wrong. GM makes those trucks in Pontiac Michigan, Janesville Wisconsin, Flint Michigan, and maybe Indiana. Ford makes trucks in Wayne, michigan, Dearborn Michigan, and other US sites. Chrysler builds trucks in Warren, Michigan. GM does build trucks in Canada and Mexico, but the majority are still built here. And the Domestic content is over 85%, going down every year, but still higher than Toyota. BTW, Toyota just had another recall on thier trucks, the 3rd this model year. We ain't dead yet!!!! lol!!
