i am curious if ther is a seal of some sort in the gear shift lever base, i am finding that water is ending up in my oil (Crank Case) when the tractor sits in the rain. this is not anti freeze, i was just wanting to know if anyone has ever had this problem.

IF it were coming thru the gear shift lever it wouldn't show up in the crankcase, but in the transmission housing. Without knowing what model or year you have it's hard to say but you probably do have a crankcase cover or plate on top that could be leaking. They do like to leak oil out so they probably let water in. CalJim

Yes, water can get in around the gear shift levers, especially if the boots are loose, cracked or missing. Also, there is humidity in the air, and temp changes cause the water in the air to collect on the metal parts and then run off in to the oil. Dealer told me to pull plugs out of the bottom of the final drives on the combine after setting all year before moving it the first time each year to get rid of the water that collects in the housing. Water and oil don't mix, drain off the water and the oil is OK to use. Ever been inside a steel building when it's cool out and see the water collected on the metal sheeting and then start to drip when the sun warms the metal? Same thing. Chris

Matt, It happens all the time if you leave them out, I think alot of water follows the hi, and lo and the p.t.o. levers, at any rate I have too many to park them all inside, so after a long rain or winter I loosen the drain plug and let the water trickle out until I strike oil, then I tighten the plug and use the tractor, right or wrong I do not know, but they are my tractors, and I have yet to have any problems with the running gear, by the way John Deere is not the only tractor that gets wet.

My JD 720 diesel always gets water in it , cured the problem by parking in the shed , could not find where it was getting in. At 50 bucks an oil change Its not fun to change every time it happens

yes, i agree with you, i would like to fix the problem regardless. i have heard from others that it could be getting in through the gear shift lever seal, but I don't know if anyone has heard of such a thing. the guy who told me is kinda goofy! haha.

it's a 1949 John Deere A. i thank everyone for their advice in this matter. At least i have some ideas now because i'm getting sick of changing the oil 3-4 times a year. it could be the condensation too, for i live in michigan and it gets pretty hot during the day and colder at night (summertime, winter is just plain cold!!!)

Check the air cleaner stack, the baffels inside will break loose and let rain in thru there. I had a B and it never did this while I had it but after it was sold it started doing it, the new owner fastened a large juice can over the top of the stack and it stoped the water from entering. When it enters it goes thru the piston rings and if it does not all seep thru before you try to crank it you will have hydrolic lock and will not crank, take out a plug and it will blow the water out the plug hole.
