1989 Chevy 3500 brake question

Funny problem with my front brakes. I have to literally stand on the brake pedal to get the left front caliper to grab.

Getting good juice to the right front.
Very soft pedal when the bleeder is open (like it should be).

On left front I disconnected the line completely from the caliper and the pedal is still very hard to push down, just like it is still connected to the caliper. It should be running fluid all over, just like the right side.

The master cylinder doesn't know if the fluid is going to the left or the right caliper, so I am guessing something might be screwed up in the ABS module.

What do you think?

Thanks and Merry Christmas.
Rick

Check the hoses. Don"t worry about the ABS part of the brakes. It only goes through the ABS part when the sensors sense a wheel lock up. That is why when you have an ABS problem you will still have the base brakes.

Allan's right, a 89 chevy only has rear wheel antilock brakes. It wasn't until I think 92 that 4 wheel antilock brakes came to be in the trucks.

Bad brake hose. From my experience may as well change them both the left and the right. One gone the other won't be far behind.

Thanks for the info. Have the Christmas thing to do today.

But tonight, I"ll start working my way towards the master cylinder. I"ll disconnect the line at the frame. That"ll answer if the rubber line collapsed, then up to the ABS and master cylinder.

Some asked, I am pretty sure the truck has ABS, it does not have wheel speed sensors like the new trucks. I think it is a 3 channel ??, 1 line to each front brake and 1 line to the rear.

I will post back as soon as I figure it out.

Thanks,
Rick

I'll bet the inside of the of the rubber hose has collapsed and not letting fluid through. As others said, remove or loosen it at the steel line connection. Then try it.

If it has ABS on the front brakes, it is proabbaly the wheel speed sensor, or possible the ABS module. I that going on with my 3500 since I had it, a few times I almost put it through the garage cause the pedal was pushing back at me. Had a neighbor look at it, he thought it was a sensor at first then seen that all 4 wheels were reading different speeds so it was the module, price to replace was pretty high so he just disabled the ABS, after that , that truck has the best braking of anything I have ever known.

Boy, I dunno,

Don't think that '89 tonner even has 4-wal does it? Think they're just that simple old 3-wal front/aft system?

Sure sounds like a bad hose to me, but I'm not the one skidding on the ice neither. :>)

1.) DOES it even HAVE 4 wheel ABS?

2.) That's EXACTLY what how things act when the inside of the brake hose doubles up inside.

Like the other poster said, disconnect the hard line "inboard" of the hose, and see if you get a soft pedal and a gush of fluid when the pedal's depressed.

Post back, and let us know what you find!

probably the rubber line from the frame to the caliper they have been known to crack and cause a blockage in the line usually causing the brakes to stick but have been known to cause this too

Disconnect that left hose at the frame to see if the hose is bad. If not, inspect the line to see if it has a spot bent flat.
