Where are the cheap tractors?

I've been thinking about getting an old Farmall or something as a restoration project. Most likely something to take up one bay of my shop for years!

My question is what area of the country has the most reasonable prices on old iron? I know here it the southeast, tractor prices can be kind of on the high side, as compared to some of the other regions. I'm judging this from reading this board for the last year or so.

I wouldn't mind going a couple of states away, if the money made it worth it. I can always use a long weekend away from work and that would be as good a reason as any!

Come on out to Utah - there's lots of smaller project tractors and even some that work fine.

I picked up a '52 8N last fall in Ogden for $1800 - runs fine, doesn't use much oil and the 3pt hitch is working (could use some work, though. Other than a new battery and an oil change, I haven't done anything to it in a year and I use it every day.

I also picked up a MF TO-35 4-cylinder diesel for $1800. Been repainted and everything works.

My 3rd tractor is another 8N with a loader (front hydraulic pump) It's in a little more rough shape - had to rebuilt carb and ignition and the front hydraulic pump leaks. But it does the job for what I need.

Lots of other good tractors out here too.

Tim

Tim is right, for the most part. There are some that that are to high. You know: $1500 worn out 8N, $100 paint job, wa-lah $3500 dollar tractor. The majority of people are very reasonable and some are glad to have somebody fix an old girl up as the farm is now sub-divided and they cannot bear to junk and old faithful friend. Their kids do not want them for the most part, they are not pretty. My first tractor an AC-b Ipicked up for $300 dollars, stuck engine, was running a day later. Next was a VAC-14, $300 came with most of the parts to fix it. It'll be running this week. Tim and I are lucky to be in such a tractor rich enviroment.
May the holidays bring peace and that hard to find part to each of you.

This is your lucky day! I just happen to know the where abouts of a couple of 9-N Ford project tractors that are so cheap you might think they are stolen. [scratch that last thought]
I could also make you a deal on a narrow front 350 Farmall TA and a 2010 JD. These tractors might look rougher than 3 nights in jail right now, but with a little fixin', who knows? If interested I can give you an E-mail address. Tom S.

The Mexican tractor jockeys probably cleaned out Texas before they worked their way up into Colorado, huh? In the 70's they almost cleaned this area of JD G's-for some reason they loved them.

that used the most of the kind of tractor you are looking for....Midwest, wide open, large farm country is where you will find the bigger row crop tractors...California vineyard country might actually be a good place to look for a small crawler, NE US probably has the higher concentration of smaller Utility type tractors. The more you find of a spcifc style of tractor, fewer buyers, lower prices. BUT...then factor in the cost to transport to where YOU are, and everything kinda levels out...G

{The more you find of a specifc style of tractor, fewer buyers, lower prices} Unless you're looking at a green and yellow thing called a 4020! Many of them all over. You wouldn't think prices would be so high on them, but they hold. I paid $8500 for a good '66 model at our local tractor jockey this year. . . went to Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, saw many in worse shape, for about the same money. They are in demand, I guess. . . .

That does seem to be true here, too. But a few years ago, it was hard to sell a 4020. Too small to farm the big acres with, too big for an acreage. The 3020's on the other hand were going for more than a 4020. 4020's were selling for around $5000, 3020's were fetching $6000-$6500. Now they pretty much bring the same money, and $6K is the low end.
