I have a 24 volt system (2 ea 12 Volt batteries)in the JD 4010. I want to put a maintainer on for the winter. I have one 12 volt unit. Can I hook it to one of the batteries and have it maintain both or would I have to disconnect one and hook it up parallel? Bob

.. and remember a dead battery will freeze. Whatever you do, don't try to charge a frozen dead battery. You will achieve unexpected results similar to an explosion.

Thnaks guys; Always good advise here. Guess I will go parallel for now. If/when these die I intend to go to a 12 volt system. Bob

I have a 24 Volt 4020, and have a cheap $19.95 Waldo World float charger on EACH battery.

I have used this setup for several years with great success and no problems.

I DID put a 5 Amp fuse in EACH of the charger leads JUST IN CASE.

You need a fuse in the primary.

disconnect the batteries from your tractor and connect parallel to maintainer as 12v. It is a good Idea to disconnect when in extended storage anyway.

Or get a maintainer for each 12V battery.

Ideal would be a 24V maintainer attached at the starter. With a 12V maintainer, hook it to one battery at a time, switching to the other every week.

Switching is a good way to go except the farm is snowed in and even now its a long walk in deep snow to get to the building. Usually dont go there much in the winter. I havent seen any 24 Volt maintainers around, will check the catalogs. thanks, Bob

Aloha, I recently ordered a 12v battery maintainer form the link below. I haven't received it but have heard a lot of good reports about it.

try going to a boat store, a lot of the bass boats are using 24volts for the trolling motors. you should be able to pick up a charger maintainer from them. they are good, weatherproof chargers, some you can hard mount right on the tractor, then just plug it in.

Wally world has 12 V trickle chargers for under $20. Put one on each 12 V battery. They can stay on continously with no harm to the batteries.
