Hey Larry
The rating is the biggest difference between automotive and marine batteries.
Automotive batteries are rated at 0 DEGREES F.
AND ARE LABELED CCA, COLD CRANKING AMPS.
Marine batteries are rated at 32 DEGREES F. AND ARE RATED CC CRANKING AMPS.Battery capacity at 80 degrees F. is 100% of its capacity. At 32 degrees F. is 65% of capacity. At 0 degrees F. is 40%.
At -20 degrees F. is 20% of capacity. As you can see ambient temperature is an integral part of a battery capacity.
Guido.

Marine batteries have more room at the bottom of the battery between the bottom and the plates so that they can take the hard pounding and rolls of a boat without shorting out other than that they are the same battery.

If your talking a deep cycle type battery nope will not work well for very long. Now if its a cranking battery it will work just fine.

No expert here but, but the only real difference I can see between auto and marine cranking batteries is the cost. Inflate the price and a picture of a boat to it and you have a marine cranking battery.

Out of convenience I've used the marine version for 15 years in my Westerbeke 33 hp marine diesel.

Just make sure its for cranking only, not to be confused with marine deep cycle batteries-another animal.

Some of the marine batteries are fine for cranking - just tend to have 20% less cranking capacity than some automotive only batteries.
Main drawback is the short warranty on them. Usually one year.

I've got four marine cranking/deep cycle batteries I bought from Walmart 4 years ago. We use them all summer in our RV, and all winter they are installed in my bulldozer and backhoe - and work just fine.

Marine Starting Batt....YES it will work fine.
There are millions of Marine Diesel's out there in the boating world.

Marine Deep Cycle Batt...Yes it will work but the batt will die an early death due to warped plates.

No cranking amperage.I doubt it would even start it!

Marine batteries are intended to provide a relatively low flow of current for a long period where a conventional tractor battery will deliver high current for a short time. ~brad

I used regular marine batteries Gel Cell Type to start my 100 HP Nissan diesel .cold or warm weather. Lasted 12 years and still were good when I changed them for AGM's.
