350 farmall frozen

I have a problem with my 350 Farmall in cold weather. It freezes up from the rear of the clutch back.

It has live hydraulics and live PTO which both work and the engine starts OK as long as the clutch is disengaged. Let out on the clutch and the engine can't pull it.

When the weather warms up everything is fine. Right now it's cold.

It has a TA which has been removed and a dummy shaft installed as a replacement.

I thought at first it was moisture in the transmission/differential, but that fluid is loose and clean. I'm thinking it must have moisture in the area the TA came out of or in that vicinity.

Usually I can put a bottle of Heet in things to thaw them out and dry out the moisture, but I don't how to access the part that's frozen up.

Looking for ideas and information.

Appreciate it,

Thanks a lot.

Well, you were so right and fully appreciated. We just had some 10 below weather here in Iowa and I thought, with the 350 sitting outside, it would be a good time to work on it.

I built a small fire under the rear end, shielded it from the wind with tarps and let it burn until it was good and warm.

When I pulled the drain on the casing about four gallon of clear water came out. I half expected it to turn to antifreeze before it stopped.

I plugged it back up and refilled the transmission and all is looking pretty good now.

Thanks for the help,

Bob

I agree with "i luv farmalls", you have water in the rear end, but I disagree with the fix. A 350 should have Hytran (or its equivelent) in the rear end. If you have hytran the oil mixes with the water and you'll never drain just eh water out. If you have gear lube it will damage your TA and shouldn't be in there in the first place.

Best move is to drain it all out and replace with Hytran or a Hytran knock off.

The tractor has water frozen in the bottom of the rear end. Thaw it out and turn the drain plug just loose enough for the water to drain out. Then when the water is drained tighten the plug, drive it around to stir the oil and sludge and drain and replace the oil.

Thanks for the information, I'll take your advice and see if I can't get rid of this problem.

Would you know just what is driven in there when the transmission is out of gear that would freeze up. Is it the countershaft gear on the transmission.?

Thanks for the help,

Bob
