Not tractor related, but I will be sleeping with my tractors if I don't get my water heater fixed. Wife goes to take a bath, and only about 15 gal of hot water comes out, then cold. I herd some time ago water heaters were having a problem with the cold water pipe inside the tank breaking loose? How far should the cold pipe extend into the tank? I priced new heaters today for around 400.00.That money should be better spent. I thought I may try to make a repair by installing a new cold line if that is that is the problem, any thoughts, or help. Stan

Completely fill and drain your tank until the water comes out clean at least 5 times once a year to prevent deposits from building up.

Toss the tank style for a tankless hotwater heater.More efficient and it also clears some floorspace in the utility room to store more junk. The bottom heating element has likely quit working in the old tank.

Some fella sent me some plans on how to build your own tankless water heater a few years back. Basically involved 220VAC thermostat, two heating elements, and about 3 feet of 4" PVC. Seemed interesting.

Cheaper to purchase a complete tankless system with proper controls, heaters, fittings, relief valve, cover etc. The home made job will look like a home made job and be lacking any sort of electrical certification. People + electricity + water = bad.

Junk it and save some money. they don't repair very good and all you ever have if more problems.
I bought one of the those new fancy plastic ones with a lifetime warranter. It cut my bill by $10 a month. Get a 50 gallon or bigger it pays off in the long run.

It is your "dip tube".You can buy a replacement at Home Depot for $2 - $3.
The tube takes cold water from the top of a 3" x 3/4" to the bottom of the tank. When the tube fails the cold water mixes with the hot at the top of the tank, acting like hot water runs out quickly
All you need to do is disconnect the cold water line from the nipple, pull what is left of the old tube out, drop the new dip tube in and reconnect the cold water supply line.
Change about 10-15 of them, saved friends and family alot of $$$

Meant to say 3" x 3/4" nipple. You don't remove it the flared end of the dip tube seats on that nipple.

I just had a new gas heater installed in a rental house. Cost me $400 for the heater and $250 for a plumber to install it, and I was perfectly capable of installing it, but from the liability standpoint in a rental there's no way I'd touch it myself.

If you wind up flooding the house, or, worse yet, burning it down, or still worse, croaking from carbon monoxide, money spent for a new heater might be well spent.

If electric hot water heater? in reply to 37 chief, 01-13-2008 22:12:08
I had an electric hot water heater that had filled with lime deposits. I took out the bottom element and cleaned it out some. This helped for a while. But then in a month it ended up replaced. The lime had shorted out the lower unit and was a waist of time to replace with still lime in it.

In this thread, I could not find that the person stated that this is a gas heater. If gas, the problem is almost certainly a failure of the dip tube. If electric, the bottom element is probably not heating.

37 chief, if you have a gas water heater the problem is the dip tube ( the pipe that extends to the bottom of the tank)Have you noticed any very small white particles clogging the screens on your faucets? Remove the cold water line from the heater. Using a piece of 1/2" copper tube with a small flare will work. Keep the tubing 4 or 5 inches from the bottom of the tank.

It may be a bad thermostat on the heater. I have never seen a gas water heater run out of hot water. See if the burner is coming on when you run out of hot water? Gas has a fast recovery.
The Sears water heater I have now is 16 years old
and I have a service policy on it for about $30.00 a year. It has elecronic ignition and a circulating pump and sold for around $800.00. I gave just under $400.00 since it was being discontinued. Its called a Sears Survivor and the tank is fiberglass. It has a lifetime warranty from Sears & if it can't be fixed they will give their 12 year water heater as a free replacement. Hal

Open up the inlet pipe, and see if the internal drop pipe is intact. My guess is that it has corroded or broken far short of the bottom. You can probably pull it right up thru the inlet. Can probably rig a replacement out of PVC pipe if necessary.

Are you on a well?
How old?

The inlet tube normally extends almost to the tank's bottom.

Most common cause of what you are describing is a bad lower element. Lower thermostat, or even a bad upper thermostat that never switches the bottom element on will cause the same symptoms.

Is it possible to pull out the burner and reach up inside? I've milked an old heater (different type, but same principal)along for a few years now, by brushing the the scale and rust off the inside. It builds up and acts as an insulator. If you have to replace it (before cold showers =cold dinners), you may consider a tankless (on demand) heater. You can get gas or electric. Depending on your habits, it may save you some duckies. And, if you want to fill the tub or take an extended shower, you don't have to wait on the tank to reheat (or keep water hot 24/7 for use once or twice a day). I'm not a salesman, but in the right situation they pay off. Prices are compareable and they take up no floor space.

Good Luck,

Dave
