350 chevy small block horsepower output

What would you think a 350 chevy std bor and crank, with a 498/501 cam , 1.94/1.50 heads with racing port work done, stock pistons, an unknown intake manifold also with racing port work done, and an unknown carb. will probably have a 9.5:1 or 10:1 comp ratio

John,
with stock pistons, and the fact that most of the 1.94 heads are 76cc,with .043 compressed head gasket thickness..realistically,your looking at 8.5-8.75:1 compression.. I'd recommend a Comp cams 268H cam for it, 268 adv. duration,.454 lift..it'll be alot more fun to drive,have tons more torque on the bottom end which is what you want in a street car..

some questions:

almost all of your horsepower is going to come from camshaft, heads, intake and carb- the bottom end is all about reliability. Go with a well prepped 350 4 bolt main block bored .030 over with the least expensive set of forged flat top pistons you can find. get a set of clean 2.02 heads, freshen 'em up, port match 'em to a used singl plane aluminum intake . Cam- I'd look for a bit more lift (.501) and less duration for the street, and I'd run a vacuum secondary holley 750 . these 355 ci motors are running every weekend on ovals all around america making 400hp or more without blowing up.have fun building it- that's almost more fun than runnin' it!

No use even fooling around with factory cylinder heads. It's cheaper to purchase a new Eldenbrock matching head, manifold & cam package that works. Better yet purchase a crate engine with warranty from Summit racing or GM Goodrench. You can't purchase the parts and assemble an engine for less $$$ than a crate engine. Plus its going to fit together and work without surpri$es. Better yet get into the fuel injected LS series of engines like the LS1, LS2, LS6 LC3 etc. They make the old small block Chevs look 2nd rate at best.

FWIW I used to be involved in building heads for winston cup engines , early 90s we were getting 650-700 hp out of 355 in. sb alum. heads flat tappet cam and single 750 4bbl carb , that was a 27k$ engine (from what i was told) anyway the heads you talked about are ok for decent street motor But have the exhaust valves opened up for 1.60 that is the bottle neck in 1.92 heads that is the reason alot of people use the 202s is that they have 1.60 exhaust valves stock .I will second the theory that lots of money does not buy hp. matching parts makes power . good luck and be careful mike

Move No. 1 would be to yank that bumpstick outta there. It will be a dog on the street. This engine needs a set of 72cc heads for 10.1 and 76cc for 9.5:1. Chances are your 194s are one of these or the other. Use 'em. His fuelie heads were likely 64cc's on flattops making 11.1. Top all this off with an Edelbrock Performer or Performer RPM kit and make power right out of the box. Carb, cam, intake will set you back 500 bones, but will be a matched set. Follow this with a good quality set of headers and you should see 300+ streetable ponies.

Well, the first thing one needs to consider is what one is going to do with it, realistically. Not what one dreams about or would like to do with it, but will do with it. All too often, some will go out and buy the best and most radical hardware. Cams with high lift and long durations for top end, and then cruise low to mid RPM at best, except the occasional burnout on low grade pump gas. An engine is an air pump, top and lower ends and is built by components that compliment each other(s). Balancing an engine isn't inexpensive, but its one of the most straight forward horse power increases one can do. That "unknown" intake needs to match that "unknown" carb or injection needs to match that cam needs to match the scavaging of exhaust, and all of that needs to match gearing and timing. Port polishing? Of course thats good, but not so cheap either, and unless are going to keep it up and clean, fuel deposites from lousy pump gas are going to take a nasty toll on flow real quick. And if you are going to polish those runners and stuff, don't forget to grind them to match where they meet. Can go on endlessly, and there's only one simple solution... a component system built around your needs, your real needs. The most expensive items are not always the best, and are often the worst if they don't match or compliment the rest.

I agree with you. More people NEED to build them to what they are actually going to DO with it. I see so many hot rods built to the hilt that would be fine on the drag strip , but then they just cruise around town in them belching smoke and loading up and not running right. They would of had more than enough for what they do with a stock set up. Build them for fuel effiency so you actually drive and enjoy it more instead of sitting in the garage because race gas costs too much.

I agree with Steve. Those 1.94 heads are going to choke it down. For any kind of performance you really should have 2.02 double hump fuelie heads, minimum. And with an unknown intake and unknown carb, it's impossible to hazard a guess on hp.

When we were racing stock cars, our 350's would usually dyno about 530-540 hp, but they were more than just tweaked.

i want to run this motor on pump gas and the man who owns this had the 350 in his drag car with 2.02 heads and said the comp ratio was 11:1; a bit high for pump

we are doing a 65 vette at the shop. the motor is at the engine shop, fresh rebuild. 327, fuelie heads. motor make 410 hp on the dyno, pump gas. street motor, just gonna be a fun car for the weekend cruises for one of our customers. have roughly 5k in the motor.single 4 bbl holley, dual plane intake. no no2 or forced air.

Could be ok, but I really think the heads even with port work will hold you back. There are affordable aftermarket unported heads that will outflow ported iron stock heads. I would really consider vortec heads, I'm a huge fan. I guess I should ask before I get in to all this.... What will the engine be going in, and what will you be using it for?

Sounds like it could be good, but then again it could be a hand grenade / boat anchor. Depends who built it and what pieces they used.
