JD 175 FEL Bucket only works with low flow

My JD175 fel bucket will only tilt up with the valve barely open or at engine idle. If the spool is opened all the way or the throttle is advanced, it stops suddenly, with a jolt. Goes down smoothly, lift works fine in both directions. No visible external leaks.

Controller is a double spool. I switched sides and the lift works fine on either side, tilt fails on either side. I took the tilt cylinders to JD dealer who repacked them. Not only did not help, now it leaks down. Help?

Is there a pair of hydraulic quick-couplers involved in the "tilt" circuit?

If so, likely there is a problem with one of them, in that the ball is being lifted just barely off of it's seat, and gets slammed closed by high oil flow rates.

Additional evidence to support Bob's theory in reply to Bob, 02-01-2008 07:11:02
A 4020 with a 158 loader had a condition where the loader would jump going up, but not down. The bucket hydraulics were fine.

So, we Scratched the broken spring in the pump idea.

A look at the quick connect for the "up" side of the loader showed broken internal parts. The ball was rattling around inside the socket.

Id say bad releif valve. works when it dont have much pressure then to much releif opens dummps fluid.

relief valve on the pump??? Re: JD 175 FEL Bucket only works in reply to jonjon, 02-01-2008 08:07:37
JD does not use a relief valve on the pumps with closed center hydraulics. Why would they when the pump de-strokes when system pressure reaches rated psi? I have seen pressure relief valves on loaders or backhoes to protect lines & rams from overpressure due to mechanical force.

I agree with Bob to check the quick couplers. This does have a open hydraulics system so there should be a regenerative valve and it has a bypass on it. BUT this is something I know little about, have seen them apart has a orfice, ball and solenoid involved but that is the extent of my knowledge of that.
