Well, we're off school today and the primer is drying so i have nothing to do on it. So its on to the head. when you tap the valves, some make a hollow noise, some dont. Dick L made me an offer to re-build it for free but i dont know if that'll be nessicary or not. Ive never worked on a head before so i dont know what to look for as far as evaluating it. I'll also post pics of cylenders 3 & 4 today. When i seperated the head and manifold looking for cracks, there are these solid globs of rust in both head and manifold. How should they be removed, are they even a problem???

Lanse just let me know where to send it and I will donate to your tractor project. When I did my first car i had to get all the money myself and its hard on a young kid to do that. Its even harder for kids to get summer work now so i don't feel bad about helping you out here and there.
Its just nice to see a young kid interested in working on old tractors.

Lanse, you can roll the push rods on a flat surface and tell if they are bent or not, and sometimes you can straighten it out with a tap of the hammer on the high side. If you get the valves out poke some holes in a piece of cardboard, and put the valves in them and number the cylinder they came out of. Also you can take the vaves to the grinder, (wire brush side) and clean they up nice a perty. Jack

I think its great that everyone is trying to help Lanse. WE ALL had to start somewere and learn the ropes as we went, noone is a born pro. If it wernt for guys like Lanse, who would keep old tractors alive after were all gone. Better than doing drugs, sitting on a couch playing games all day, or shoothing people up at schools. good luck Lanse JayinNY

This kid needs his head examined in reply to Lanse, 02-15-2008 12:04:50
I mean...
He needs the tractor's head examined.
Just kidding you Lanse.
As others have mentioned, there's a lot of folks here, myself included, are rooting for you.
I haven't weighed in on your project before but I have been following your progress.
Follow their advice and you'll have that tractor running in no time.
I was 17 when I rebuilt my first engine in Ag class in high school. It was an Allis B.
The things I learned on that engine have stayed with me ever since.
Keep at it and good luck.

Lanse and Dick, I seem to remember that Lanse said he had a couple of bent pushrods. With an address I will send him some N/C. Lanse, I hope that you are starting to listen to all of the good advice you are getting here. Learned what little I know by listening to others and I'm a whole lot older than you. Good luck and keep up on the school work. Arlen

Don't forget the conditions I put on that free rebuild of the head. Your Mom, Dad or both need to be involved in me doing the work or showing you. They may not be real interested at the moment but when they see what all you are learning they will become more interested. The guys on the board here will keep your nose to the grind stone with pep talks and advise. You have a bunch of guys rooting for you to succeed in this project.

Hi Lanse,

If your not rebuilding this tractor for immediate resale, that does not mean you can't sell it in the future, I'll spring for 10% of the parts cost with a maximum of $50 for my total contribution to your total project. Any overage of contributions can be applied to books or quality tools for your use.

Dick L can send me a email and I'll send him the money, if that's ok with Dick ?

Dick-what do you think??? I want to thank everyone on this site for doing this expecting nothing in return, sofar ive gotten a carb, a set of manuels, a good price on a mag and a front rim, and now $$ and a head job, and advice worth as much as everything combined, and shoot-i know im forgetting something, but anyways, thanks everyone! I sure am glad your dad decided to join in listen to what he has to say even if you disagree it will help in the long run because many times my father was rite when I thought otherwise and spending time with him on this project will build a stronger relationship with each other. My father and I have a great relationship and I include him in alot of my side jobs so we can spend time together as well as help buy some groceries. Even though he usually just hands me tools while I do the work I give him 1/2 the profit and I am glad I can when he is there.

My out of pocket will be very little. New seats and guides if needed. Guides are probly a for sure but I have bought these tractors that people have had the heads rebuilt with new guides along with new pistons and rings on the bottom side only to put standard bearings on a ground crank and when it knocked they parked it and let the rain rust it up. You never know until you get your mic's out and start checking parts.

It is called talking. I know at 15 it was hard for me to talk to my parents about my projects. Problem was I figured out many years later I just had to many and they tuned me out because I was not focused on the same one long enough for them to know it was not just chatter. I guess I didn't really figure it out until I had a coupla 15 year olds of my own. Mom tells now that I never set and talked long enough for her to know what I was talking about. She couldn't keep up with my different rambling ideas.
You may or may not have the same problems.

Have them read the posts. They can then see that you are not on a board with just a bunch of kids.
To most here this is a serious hobby.

Lanse, I have never removed a head from even a running engine that couldn't benefit from at least a little work. Even the engines that seemed to be running very strong always needed a little touching up on the valves and seats. I'd sure let Dick L help you out.

Do you have a 3/4" deep socket? A pipe nipple will do the same thing. If you do set it over the valve end down on the spring and hit the socket a coupla times with a hammer. Try not to loose the keepers but if you do its no big deal. put the keepers, springs, and all the spring retainers in a coffee can. Tap the valves out. (TAP NOT HAMMER) Oil them up good and if they get tight turn the head over and tap them back and forth with oil added as needed. Then get some good pictures of the seats once the valves are out. One picture of each of the four cylinders.
Full of rust makes it sound like you have a good or bad chance that the seats are pitted on at least two valves. Hope not but still no big deal if they are. Once you have the valves out and the rust cleaned off the stems and out of the guides you can see if you need new guides. If they are bad I will get a set on order. I am sure you won't find any cracks in the head. That head is one of the strongest heads ever made.

Lanse, if there's something about those little Allis engines that DickL doesn't know, it ain't worth knowing. By all means take him up on that offer. He might even find you a few extra horsepower if you don't keep a close eye on him.

Take Dick L up on his offer. Offers like that don't come around everyday. Even if it doesn't need anything you will gain knowledge from him that you can't get very many other places.

Just by being in the same room with him you will learn things about that tractor and mechanics in general.

Do not turn down an offer like that !!!!!

Very seldom will you find a head that won't benefit from a little valve work. Having good sealing valves will help it start better by hand too.
