Wife wants to go to Las Vegas. I have March 20 thru 23 off. Any recommendations on a decent CHEAP place to stay out there? Not impressed with the flights I've found on the internet, Most have to change planes and layover for an hour or two. Any suggestions? Chris

WHERE DO YOU LIVE? No one can help you if you dont provide the required information to offer suggestions! What is your "Reasonable Desired Budget" for a hotel room per night? How close to the strip do you want to be? Do you want to rent a car, travel by taxi etc.?

Here is one MUST DO IN VEGAS! Del Frisco's Steak House!!!!! !! As long as you dont kill your steak by cooking it just past medium (might as well eat a hockey puck) it will be the best steak you ever ate! I have mine Medium Rare.

First time I went to Vegas was in 1993. Dad took us all to celebrate my wife's 21st birthday.

Last time I went was one year ago this January. That trip was actually for work, although I did have evenings free to play.

In between, wife and I have been to Vegas another 3-4 times.

I do like to gamble. I don't like to gamble high stakes. $2-$3 a hand blackjack is my game. I've found that downtown usually has more lower stakes tables. I've been told the slots pay better, too (I don't play enough slots to know personally).

When we first started going, food was cheap. It was easy to get comped a meal. I can remember my BIL and I eating prime rib at Binyon's downtown for $3.99 including baked potato, vegetable, roll, drink, and dessert (just a dish of ice cream, but couldn't complain). We ate it almost every meal; it was cheaper than the value meals at the fast food joints.

Food is no longer the giveaway it was. Probably cheaper downtown, but the buffets are better on the strip, I thought they had more variety.

We usually stayed someplace downtown, went site seeing out on the strip, and gambled downtown.

Last time I paid to go, I booked package deals (hotel+airfare) through a travel agent online. That's been several years ago, but from what I've seen in advertisements the packages still appear to be the way to go.

I would not rent a car. We did, once. The traffic out there is crazy, and there is plenty of public transportation available. Something new they had the last time I was out there was "The Deuce"-double decker buses that cruise up and down the strip. A 24 hr. pass was $3, I think. Coworker and his wife were in Vegas for the first time; at night we would just cruise the strip on the bus and sightsee.

Those are the things that stick out right now; if you have any specific questions just ask.

I have been there 3 times. Stayed at Treasure Island ( liked it) Luxor ( ok) and The Plazza downtown (not the best). You can't go wrong with any of the 4-5 star hotels on the strip ( Mirage, Venitian, Mandelay Bay, NY NY, MGM Grand, Monte Carlo, Ceseasr's , Wynn, Belligio. When we stayed down town at the Plazza, it wasn't much cheaper and it wasn't that great.

If you do make it there, be sure to see Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon.

Where are you at? I'm in Fort Mohave/BHC... got any old tractors? Hard to find people around here interested in the stuff!

Where would you have to fly from?

There are sometimes cheaper flights to fly into Phoenix or LA and then to Vegas. America West or Southwest are my choices.

I find it's just easier to mail them a check for 250.00 cheaper than stepping foot in a casino

My wife and I have been there 3 times. We have stayed in a different place each time we went. Circus Circus was about $100 per night in a package deal with Aligeant Airlines (spelling) and it's on the strip.
Last time we stayed at the Fitzgerald downtown, it was a bit more per night, I'm thinking around $125 per night.
We stayed 3 nights and 3 days each time we went and spent between $1500 and $2000 for the whole trip. That includes flight, hotel, meals, and entertainment. But I'm pretty cheap, and don't gamble much so I didn't just go hog wild on spending like most of the people we went with did.

Don't know where you are... but check allegiantair.com for discount flights and to see if there is a town near you that they fly to. I go from Vegas to ND for around $120 each way...

We usually stay at the Golden Nugget on Fremont Street for around $120 per night... a cheap hotel near Fremont Street is the Gold Spike, not real pretty, but the rooms were clean and seemed safe (plenty of security moving about).

I prefer Fremont Street as it is a bit slower pace than the rest of the strip and pretty much everything you need is within a half mile or so. The shows on the big overhead screen are pretty neat most of the time, too.

If you want gambling and scenery on the Colorado River with less crowds, check out Laughlin, NV - I live just across the river in Bullhead City, AZ. My favorite casinos in Laughlin would be the Tropicana Express, Golden Nugget, and Harrah's.

I went years ago when wife was in her best friend"s wedding. I"m not a gambler and probably didn"t spend over a $1 total gambling but there is a lot more to do. Casino"s are fantastic just to see and many free attractions. Bus trips to Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon. Lunch (not dinner) in Stratosphere restaurant. Evening in Old Town Vegas. Being cheap we stayed in Circus Circus low rises way out back which I wouldn"t recommend. Direct flights on Southwest but I have no idea about current fairs.

I sent you an email about Allegiant Airlines. They are promoting a "buy one, get one free" fly and stay package. You book your package and the second person flies free. They have a list of motels and prices and tours you can take.

Are there any "package" deals available? We went several years ago; flight, room, and transportation to and from the airport providred. If you go, rent a car and see Hoover dam. Very impressive.

If you don't think you can't afford or have the money to spend on the trip --- why would you want to go there and put hard earned money in one arm bandits --- some just don't use Common Sense and use money in a wise way ..... . reminds me of the Haves and Haves Nots.....

I am Cheap, not broke. Why pay 3 or 4 times as much to sleep in a bed? 1577 miles is tooo far for me to want to drive. $550/person is pricey, but I can live with it. Just know that folks who go there often know the tricks to stay cheaper than the average person. Chris

Hey Chris, my wife and I have been there several times. I don't really don't like gambling much but it is an amazing place to see. Billion dollar hotels on the strip in the middle of a desert between some mountains. Amazing.Very adult place, so I wouldn't recommend taking the grandson. We've went on Alligent Air on the half price air fare sales they offer every now and then.Go the middle of the week when there are no conventions or sporting events going on. MUCH cheaper then. Check out Allegiantair.com. Non stop flights.

Vegas is MUCH less expensive during the week. A hotel room that costs $250 Friday and Saturday is probably going to cost about half that during the week.

Las Vegas is fun, not cheap.

If you stay on the strip you won't have to rent a car. If you stay out in the sticks to save on hotel costs, you will spend much more getting to the strip.

I usually stay on the strip. It is fun to go out at any time of the night and people watch or hang out.
