Europe Diesel cheaper than Gas????

Saw an article on CNN talking about the new VW Diesel Hybrid they have in Europe. Sounds good, getting 69 mpg hwy. For my wife that would be great.
Later in the article something caught my eye.

"For now, the Golf TDI Hybrid comes closest to making sense in Europe. Diesel fuel generally costs less than gas there, adding to the financial benefit of greater fuel efficiency. And European regulations don't require all the pricey emission-cleaning technology needed to sell diesels in the U.S. That's why diesels make up about half of new car sales in Europe."

Why is their diesel fuel cheaper than in the US? Is it still sulfur diesel, not our ulsd? Are we getting it from the EPA? Maybe the Europeans are the ones hurting the environment.

I hope the guy that used to post the pictures from England can chime in.

Europe actually has alot tighter emission regs than we do thats why we are shipping alot of biodiesel over there and they have so many plants their self.

If you ask me the oil companies are sticking it to the diesel consumers, mostly businesses, to make up what they say they are losing on gas .This keeps the bulk of the masses from not crying to hard to their local politicans. The trucking companies just pass it on to the consumer again.I won't touch heating oil.Still trying to get over the $ 3.51 per gallon price on a delievery yesterday and that's if paid in 10 days.

Not europe, but diesel is quite a bit cheaper here (Mexico) than gasoline. Also, donīt see diesel half and 3/4 ton pickups here. My neighbor does have a Ford 3/4 ton diesel he brought down from Louisiana, but thatīs the only one Iīve seen.

In Germany, normal diesel is about 40 euro cents cheaper than gas. Normal and super unleaded cost the same, with super plus being more expensive. Americans here don't pay the taxes on fuel, but still pay different than the Germans do (ie. normal UL costs less than super UL and diesel costs more than gas) go figure.

Cheaper? Varies some by tax rate of fuel. VW diesel less emissions? need to check author of article- maybe literature or journalism major with no technical background- my old VW rabbit diesel didn't have a cat in exhaust- that made it less emissions than gas model, big deal :( Ultra low sulfur diesel has been in Europe about 10 years now, I think the German road version has a touch of Bio additive- rapeseed/canola with a touch of lard if I remember right. Younger brother says he is going to use horses and team of ponies on mower because fuel if too high- he doesn't want to burn alky mix, he wants to drink more himself. European diesel also may have some coal oil added- France and Germany both have coal processing for coal tars and light oils needed in industry, Germany used the coal oil fuel in WW2. RN

They also produce alot more biodiesel in Europe (and encouraged to use it) ,rather than wasting time with ethanol b.s.!!

Not entirely true in reply to colekicker, 03-07-2008 11:06:37
In most of the world, diesel is approx. 25 % less than gasoline. In the United Kingdom and Spain, gas and diesel are around the same.

In a few countries, e.g. Switzerland and Slovenia, diesel is higher than gasoline.

In Great Britian, there is less tax on ULSD than high-sulphur diesel. Germany is doing the same.

Average price for diesel in Ireland today is $6.90 (US dollars per U.S. gallon)

I think--repeat, think--I've read that diesel in Europe is kept low (taxed less?) to encourage switching from gas to diesel, the theory being that diesels can get much better mileage and can be tweaked (cleaned up) after gassers are pretty well out--but I can't locate a reference, so it's just a guess.

Had breakfast with a local trucker Sunday morning. HE was blaming all these diesel pickups for HIS high fuel costs.

Truckers use a lot of fuel idling in truck stops.A jet air liner uses 3500 gallons per hour and there are 4000 planes in US airspace most days.Hard to blame diesel pickups. The fuel an air liner uses in one hour would heat my house for 5 years.
