I just bought a 1940 9n 9n138468. the front rims are 6 lug with narrow spacing unlike the pictures of early 9n"s so i started looking and it appears to be 8n rims. they are 6.5-16 tiresmounted on them. It still has I-beam front ladder bars. Is this common? It also has the dipstick on the right cover for the transmission but the earlier cover under the shifter. Is this common

8N hubs will fit 9N spindles and vice versa. It's been done more than once. The usual reason to do it is so that you can put the wider 6.00-16 (or 6.50-16) tires on a 9N rather than the original 4.00-19 tires it came with.

these tractors are more than 60 years old. It is very common to have changes over the years. Some on e could have pur on hubs from an 8N or an early Ford car. It will work Ok so do not wory unless you are trying to refurbish it to like it was when new, then you will have to replace the hubs, wheels and tires

I wasn't sure if someone had gotten car rims or modified to 8n. I was only asking because i wanted to order new rims and tires after cleaning it up and wasn't sure what to order. I also noticed that the sheet metal on the front end is from a later model. it has the bolt at the lower corners on each side. I don't feel like doing a complete restoration back to original. Just want to make it something my wife won't give me crap about because it is so ugly.

The 2N had the hood mounting bolts in the doglegs and toublar radious rods while the 9N had the hidden hood bolts ant I beam radious rods. The wheels are they the large hub 5 lug type or a 5 lug small hub (5 1/2" bolt spacing) common car hub and standard 5 lug implement wheel or the 8N type with 6 lugs on about a 6" bolt circle, a common 6 lug implement wheel. Anouther possiblity is if the weels were replaced with 35-39 Ford car wheels that were a large hub 5 lug hub and the coresponding car wheel but the rim width for all would be 4-4 1/2" for all and these will take a 6:50 tractor or implement tire.
