Two stories about bobcat with a rundown feeling. Wife reported seeing one within mile and a half of home 'bout a month ago. Right out on the road, in a swampy area. Another neighbor reported a cougar 4 miles from here last fall.

Gonna have another business meeting with the llamas. Pep talk on watching out for the sheep and goats!

If you're talking about cougars, my wife and I saw one on our farm in Presque Isle County over 20 yrs ago. We were taking a walk in the evening and in a hay field with round bales still in it we saw one that I think was hunting field mice that hide under the bales. The field was quite isolated and it didn't stay long after we saw it. Never saw another one.
Was at Mill Creek Sawmill near Mackinac and there was a naturalist had an exibit in the woods there and he had a display with skulls from all the wild animals of Michigan, I told him he was missing one. He said he knew it but there officially wasn't any in Michigan. So I guess there is someone who never leaves his office in Lansing that if he doesn't see one personally it doesn't exist.

Yeah, cougars, they are protected in Michigan, but if they aren't here, why protect them?? Been plenty of reports of seeing them around, and I myself believe I saw one one night around dusk. The local CO said there was "an escaped pet" cougar running around, whose pet it was no one knew, but that only came out after so many people said they saw it.

My dad saw a bobcat 20 years ago near his home, M-59/I-94 area. He was shocked, but there was an area that had been cleared for businesses and homes, ran the animals out I guess. There is Bear in the lower Penn. now, a roofer that did some work for me 7 years ago said he saw a black bear crossing the freeway 1 hour south of Traverse city over 10 years ago now. Makes me want to only walk my land with a loaded rifle or shotgun.

About ten yrs ago my brother and I were turkey hunting on the edge of the Dead Stream Swamp near Houghton Lake and he had a Bobcat come in to his call. He was well hidden and it never saw him.

As far as cougars there used to be rumors of Jaguars in SE Mi. My folks lived near Milford and something that looked like one attacked a horse probably 20 yrs ago. Also my cousin who farms near Manchester had something attack his sheep. He said the claw marks were 5 inches or more across.

We have a wolverine over here near Ubly. Its been photographed and documented. They think it came over from Canada on a Garbage truck.

It is amazing the wild animals that are around, I have Loads and Loads of Deer, I see them every day right outside my windows. I could plink them off with a gun at 10 yards...just open the window and start blasting. The bobcats, jaguars, Wolverines scare me because I have a 7 year old boy that I will not allow him to go outside by himself yet, I live in a very wooded area, If you walk 100 feet in 2 directions in the summer time you cant be seen unless you have on bright orange. Where is Manchester? I live in N. Oakland county west of Oxford.

Manchester is west of Ann Arbor about 20 miles. I was raised near Milford but now live at Caro in the Thumb.

Ya,we've got so darned many critters around here it ain't funny. Neighbor kid trapped a badger right along my fence 2 years ago. My cousin shot one in his yard that was acting funny. There are plenty of bears around. Was a picture in the paper 2 or 3 years ago of one in the yard right next door.My son saw a cub a week before that. A guy south of town had one in his birdfeeder several times. We had one near the cabin up by Grayling for several years. He'd come up and eat things that we put out on a stump. We've got movies of him. There was a confirmed sighting of a cougar near Jackson a year or two ago. One attacked a horse. There's been video of one in a city park on the news in SW Mi. They used to tell of a black pantherlike cat around here when I was a kid. My uncle swore up and down that he saw it in his barn a couple of times. Said he'd open the door and it would be up in the hay. Those bobcats have been common for a long time. You could always hear them back in the swamps around Cedar Lake.

20 years ago there were no wolves in the UP either, but I saw them occasionalythen and way too frequently now. many people I know have seen cougar in the area and would beg to differ with anyone who is a skeptic .BTW why does our DNR protect Cougar in Mi, if they aren't here ?

I didn't get a paper yesterday, but you must be talking about the one that was hit in front of Twin Ponds yesterday. The wife came along and saw it just after it was hit. She said it was still alive. DNR was there when she came back. Said they were trying to get it in a transport.

I wouldn't be so sure about there not being a cougar or two around...up here in Ontario there have been several reported sitings, lots of pawprints have been found, and they even confirmed scat found near Port Colborne, Ontario, as being that of a cougar. There was a big article on it a couple of months ago in Canadian Geographic. Now whether this cougar is a wild one roaming outside of its range, a zoo escapee, or someone's escaped pet remains to be seen.

Bobcat yes, Cougar, no way. Last confirmed cougar was trapped in the Huron Mountains of Marquette County back in 1939 but that does not stop people from being sure they have seen them. Bobcats have actually been seen in every county because they do disperse as individuals at times. If there were cougars in Michigan some one would have surely treed one with hounds or hit one with a car, there needs to be a minimum number of animals inorder to maintain a population that surely would be confirmed.

I know some people who do animal rescues, and a lot of exotic animals are taken from dope dealers. One guy kept a a African lion in the basement, used it encourage the deadbeats to pay up. Many years ago, a female tv reporter in Detroit got attention for walking around with a jaguar on a leash. She donated it to the zoo when it became hard to handle. The most dangerous non human animal is the neighbor's dog. In Fowlerville 2 people were killed by 4 dogs roaming the neighborhood.

Many years ago, the game wardens were out here, near Pittsburgh, Pa. looking for a reported brown bear! Now, nobody i knew had seen it, but the wardens looked mighty hard for it anyway! I had heard back then, that a local hunter had found a brown bear cub lost in the woods up north, and brought it home to my area. That story made the rounds, and friends said they were true! When the cub got old enough to survive on its own, he let it go! Maybe thats what the GW was looking for. Never heard if they found it. Haven't seen any bobcats here yet, seen and heard coyotes, even saw one. But, there seems to be a dearth of loose cats and dogs hereabouts any more!
