The Trucker strike thread got me thinking about serious flaws I see in our Government set-up. There are so many politicians and so much corporate money, that there is literally nothing an official with a good idea can do. It takes years to pass watered down legislation. If good ideas make it to law, the effectiveness gets lost in all the bureaucracy of carrying out the intent.

There is relatively little that the politicians can do to "take ownership" and enact major positive changes. Non-elected major Corporate Executives can essentially run the US and change things overnight. Our daily lives are more directly ruled by industrial cartels than by democracy.

Thoughts???

A little humor there: have a King & Queen. From what little I recall from Poli. Sci., we have a Republic type system in the U.S. and NOT direct Democracy. So it's NOT a Town Hall type of government. Therefore there will be frustration with our Representatives and slowness of getting problems solved. It has been this way my whole life and what to do about it I DON'T KNOW. Maybe the thing to do is be sure to VOTE and vote wisely.

The whole problem is the citizens themselves.

A republic or democracy will only last until people learn they can appropriate money from the public trough. Eventually the trough runs dry.

The citizens will ALWAYS vote for the candidate who promises them the most from the public treasury. How many people do you know who would vote for a candidate who campaigned on the promise that he would balance the national budget by raising taxes, cutting Social Security payments and other "entitlements", doing away with the farm program, and cutting all subsidies to schools?

Give it some honest thought.

Without a doubt we have the best political system in the world. But it doesn't matter how good the system is if the people running it abuse it. Its like guns. The gun itself is neither good or bad. It depends on the person using it. In my personal opinion, it seems that our politicians have forgotten of the people, by the people, for the people. And yes, some good guys go to Washington to try and make a difference and get squashed. Its not the system that needs to be revamped, but the attitude of the people running it.

yeah, and then of course there is the lobbyists in DC. especially the insurance lobbyists with all that money, think of the power they wield..

From reading history seems like most democracies only last about 200 years or so,or as one individual on here put it "until they can figure a way to empty the treasury"

I think some politicians go to Washington with the idea of changing the world. I think they find out the reality of politics, that there is really no difference between the parties, then they get caught up in stuffing their pockets.
I think the whole political system is archaic and needs an overhaul.

Maybe ask the Queen of England to appoint one of her boys as Governor/General- Viceroi of repentent colony? She has a couple military experienced offspring maybe available. Wouldn't have to worry about presidential elections. Only bad part would be Nancy Pelosi claiming title of Prime Minister. RN
