Parts mongers and scrappers - same old gripe

Hi All , Yesterday at an auction there weren't as many scrappers in attendance which is good but there was a kid there with to much money and little regard for the older tractors other than the money they could make him from parts . He bought at least two Olivers , a 1600 and a 1650 that both ran like tops but one had a cracked exhaust manifold . One had the high speed rearend supposedly . The tin was OK but they were working tractors not parade tractors . He drove them out of there . He wanted them strictly for parts . What a shame to destroy good tractors like that ! I hope he never has kids that like tractors because the only tractors left will be the ones that won't run without a computer and we all know how fast computers become obsolete . I'm getting tired of trying to save anything for the future generations . All they can see are dollar signs . I know all of them aren't that way but it seems the majority are . It's sad that the kids of today have no appreciation for the technology of yesterday , of how things were built to last generations not just a few years . Sorry about the same old ranting - I suppose I'll get the same old defense about how there were thousands of those tractors built and they aren't rare because of that . No - they aren't rare now . But at the rate they are being destroyed for ebay sales how many years before they are rare ? ...Randy

Yeah, people always want to make an offer, and it's like "go away". I'm only 20, but I have every intention of keeping my old AC up and running and not letting it slip into the scrap yard or parts market. Kids just see $$$ signs these days.

Hi , Well , I guess all the tractor lovers love cash more than tractors . That's OK . I'll be dead in a few years anyway . The children of tomorrow will miss out on a lot of things due to the greed of today . I'm not picking a fight here , I'm just trying to encourage a second thought before destroying anything strictly to make some money . I agree with those that say you can't save them all . That's not what I'm suggesting . There's a finite number of tractors of any color out there . Use them wisely . ...Randy

That's about the same attitude the younger generation has for the land. Young guys like me who care about the land and love every aspect of farming don't have a chance because we weren't lucky enough to be born to the right brother. The real kicker is the kids who were born on the farm have absolutely no interest in it other than to sell it to the highest bidder. Of which I of course am not.

i will be a organ donor (i sure wont need em). I think its good, those two tractors will keep dozens more in the field for "just a few more seasons" :-) but i could never hack up any old tractor.....

Amazing the way tractors sell or don't sell. I have 3 Deeres, a complete 41' H a 44' A hand start (older restos and running) and a 47 G in pieces. People stop constantly wanting to buy them. But they think they are doing you a favor by offering a couple hundred buck tops for them.
I finally got pi**ed enough to hang out a shingle!
Heck I know what these are worth.

I see parting out tractors the same way I see organ donors: From one death many lives are saved. I am an organ donor, and I part out tractors (not running ones yet, though).

Meh, who cares? Sounds like a kid is being industrious and making some cash for himself. And the parts he strips off will be sold to keep other tractors operating.

I agree. If scrapping out one old machine saves a couple others, isnt it worth it? Whats wrong with trying to make a little money? I've done such as that with a lil bit of everything since I was 14. I'm not trying to pick a fight, but if it bothers you, bid against them or dont do business with them. It's that simple.

On popular tractors, you'll make a lot more selling good used parts than a complete tractor. Look at places that sell heavy equipment parts. They'll go to an auction to buy perfectly good Cats to strip for parts if the price is right. D6's, D7's and D8's are common to be stripped down. Dave

You can't save'em all. Pick a brand and save what you can. Maybe pick up a few others for trading stock.

Yep, I'm 16 and although I think a lot about money $$$$$$$, tractors come first. I tried to spend the money I had saved up for a truck on a Jetstar 3 because I really wanted it. I hear all kinds of stories about tractors getting scraped and also something else it turning tractors into pullers. That is one thing I will never do. Adding a straight pipe and different tires is ok but these guys totally refinish them and then cant sell them

If his buying them for parts bothered you,why didn't you buy them ,and keep them whole? Whatever he bid could have been outbid.

If you are going to part are tractors, the only ones that are worth parting out are the ones that are in pretty good shape. The ones that are all worn out do not have enough good usable parts left on them to make it worth while. I've been down that road too often already.

I am 22 years old. I am fascinated by old tractors. I think it is a shame to see a good running tractor go to the scrapyard. I know every tractor can't be fixed, but I always consider it when I see one. My grandpa and I have close to 30 tractors and are always looking for more to work on when the farming is slow.
