The original subject was "Re: JD 4620 wont start".

My 4320 has always been a hard starter but this year it just won't turn over. Dash light turn's on and the solenoid on the fire wall just click's, I have by-passed the solenoid on the starter and it turns over great but that doesn't solve it for me. I have replaced batteries, alternator over the last year and have gone threw everything except the wiring harness. I should have watched DAD more often!

I think 4320's have an extra solenoid above starter mounted on firewall same s late model 4020's. If so be sure this solenoid has a good ground.

4320's are dry. Still possible to get run over with a syncro trans.
Those hydraulic transmissions are a very efficient trap to eliminate the shallow end of the gene pool. Tinker genius with screwdriver in hand after jumping the starter. Gets run over without warning 1-2 seconds after the engine starts.

BE CAREFUL bypass starting that thing! (Or better yet, DON'T!) Be SURE it's in PARK, 'cause when it starts and picks up speed, and the hydraulic clutch engages, it will be all over you before you know it!

Turning the ignition key operates a solenoid on the engine side of the firewall, above the LH rear of the engine.

Perhaps that is what your hear "clicking", and it is bad, and not making contact, so no power is being sent on to the actual solenoid on the starter.

There will be 2 large studs on that upper solenoid.

Grab a test light. One stud will be always "hot". When you turn the key to start, and it "clicks", the other large terminal should then be "hot" as well, and the "S" terminal down on the main starter solenoid.

Check that out, and post back!

Interesting to find out that a 4320 has a hydralic clutch, would this be the Perma Clutch option?

My error was in transposing "4320" into "4230"!

Sorry about that!

Bob; I have only tryed to by-pass the keyed switch to see if there is enough power to the solenoid on the start. I haven't tryed your idea with a test light but will today and again thanks for reminding me that things do happen and to be carefull. Jacque

As I said in the other post, I mentally transposed "4320" to "4230". I'm not sure, offhand, where the auxillary starter relay will be on your 4320... under the cowling ahead of the steering wheel, I'll ASSUME, rather than under the hood, as a 4230's would be.

Anyhow, you should be able to track it down by the sound of it clicking when you turn the key to "start", and the same troubleshooting procedures will apply.

If a Delco SOLENOID such as used on Case you can take apart an clean copper contacts . One SMALL screw you will need to turn 1/2turn an be good as new. Just need to push other small screw back as you remove black insulated part. Dont even need to remove whole solenoid from starter.pLEASE DONT JUMP IT WITH SCDEW DRIVER.

You'll have to lift the hood to get at that upper solenoid.
