1 wire alternator

I think that my 1 wire alternator isn't charging. I have seen that I can remove the dust cover on the side and run a wire from the side to the positive. That way its excited all the time. Is this a good idea? I have a gauge that will not read at all. I am thinking the alternator is not getting excited. I don't have a key for the tractor, so I figured I would run a wire into the positive.

Hello Matt Kane
One wire alternators need only to be exited when first put into service in order to start charging. They may need to be exided if they been out of service for a long time, but usually the start chargin right up as soon as they are spinning. If you have a bad diode in the unit it may not charge much at idle and then charge at high speed.Take a volt meter reading at the battery voltage should be between 13.8 and 14.2 with the engine running.A fully charged battery voltage is 12.6v at 80 degrees F.
When charging properly alternator output is 1/3 its capacity at idle speed, so eventually it will bring battery voltage to 14v even at idle. Guido.

One wire on low speed tractor engines sometime DO NOT work the beat. Replace with the standard three wire hook-up and wire correctly.

If it has not been used for a few months, it may have just lost it's residual magnatism.
With the tractor running fast, touch the junoer wire from the BAT post to the #1 regulator terminal for a moment to excite the alternator.
Once the alternator has been excited and is charging, the magnetic field in the rotor is restored and should work to self excite again.
DO NOT permanently connect a jumper wire, it will run down your battery when the tractor is parked.
I have a tractor that only gets used for two weeks per year, that needs the "one wire" alternator "flashed" after that first start in the spring. Never have to touch it after that.

my MF135 did exactly that, was afraid the diodes got cooked when I put the cables on backward

thanks for the insight

Jumper = dead battery the next time you go to use the tractor.
Pull the alternator and get it repaired properly.
