Yet another farmer in the area with a 4430 asked me a question about tires the other day that I couldn't answer. He wants to put a new set of Firestone 18.4-38 radial tires on his tractor for the inner tires but he doesn't have enough money for the duals this year, would there be any problems with running the radials on the inside and the bias ply duals?

Thanks for all your help and input on this. I didn't think there would be a problem but I figure it's better to learn from the mistakes of others than make all of them yourself.

That is the normal pattern- old tires are used as duals. Inside radials, outside bias, works fine- just run any duals about 2/3 the psi of the inside tires.

i have done that for years now. just be sure the bias outside tires are a little bit lower in pressure then the radials. so they have an even depth footprint

Been running our 1855 that way for the 5-6 years we've owned it. Got some Coop radials ojn thew inside and a really worn out pair of Field & roads on the outside.

With any luck it's getting new tires later on this year, so then the radials will be on the outside and we'll probably have bias on the inside. No sense in putting tires on that'll be shot before they're worn out on it.

Way we always do it, tires that came off go for duals. Usually wore enough to match, set on hard suface and DE-AIR bias to maybe 8#, check squash by driving on mothers lawn and see if they are even, dont want to go on something like plowed groundd,to hard to judge/

Have done it for years. Just be sure to run the duals at a lower pressure, to account for the inceased radial tire squat/deflection, which effects tire rolling diameter. However if the duals have a lot of wear and were a smaller diameter when new (realize that although the tires are labled the same size, they probably have a slightly different diameter, which could be as much as a couple of inches), this might not be an issue. Just need to view the tires when installing and make a conclusion.

That is how I run mine, no problems doing that.
