My little B's crank is out of round according to Dick L, and that sounds REAL nice especially since i just got new bearings for it. It is apperentally pretty bad with the mains, and this could be ugly. I really dont want to buy another set of bearings, and im always on a small budget. What is your advice on the crankshaft??? Heres a sample of what we have to work with

Front Main 2.221
2.225
2.222
2.224

Rod 1 1.913
1.910
1.913
1.914

Rod 4
1.913
1.913
1.910
1.915

And the rest are pretty much the same. Any ideas here???

The GOOD news is that i got my HF spray gun today, and primed and first coated the cultivators and a mower. Looks pretty good sofar!!! Any advice on the things??? Lanselot1993@aol.com

I think you need to let somebody else measure it before you make any decisions.Maybe take it to a machine shop and see what they come up with.I think it could be that its wore, but it could just as easy be that its being measured wrong.I know they seem off some, but you could be doing something wrong.Even your micrometer could be off a little.
You are going to have to take those bearings back maybe if they arent the right ones.
Its just like anything else, machinists who measure stuff all the time can measure it and come up with an entirely different number than you,and if you watch them you cant even tell what they did different.
How did the bearings look that came out of it?Can you feel any roughness on the surface of the journals to make you think its worn?Cranks can be turned,or polished. Its not real cheap, but its not as much as a new crank.

As I told Lanse, I wonder about the readings. You can get good readings with calipers if you know how. I have ask him to put ink marker marks across the journals and take four readings which he did. I have now ask him to take 8 readings by measuring on the same lines only two times half way between the center and the outside. This will give me and idea if he is getting fairly close readings. The readings on the mains give me pause but with calipers if you are cocked you get larger readings rather than smaller reaings. I should have his head done next week. When I am able to get it down to him I will take mics and other tools with me.

Lanse, don't get in a hurry and buy a crankshaft on ebay or some place like that. You need to find one that can be measured before you buy. The statement on most cranks on ebay say (looks good) I have a half dozen out here that looks good but I would not have the guts to put them on ebay. Let me know as I ask what bearings you bought. I am sure you can make a trade. Standard bearings are not in big demand for these engines. but .010, .020, .030's under are.

You need to have your local auto machine shop to take a look at your crankshaft to see if it's
salvagable. Never buy bearings ahead of time. I always let the machine shop furnish undersize bearings. They may be able to save the crankshaft, but I doubt it if the shaft is out of round very much. You may be able to return the bearings you bought. Someone may have a good crankshaft if they can't save your shaft. Hal
