I was cleaning some oats for Dad tonight that he's selling to a guy about 30 miles away and got to wondering-

Who still cleans their own seed, be it oats, wheat, rye, etc...??? So far he cleaned and sold 40 bu. to the guys that come and dehorn our calves, and we gotta do another 100 for the next guy, plus about 40 or so for our own uses. We've got maybe 30-35 bu. done again, just doing a little bit here & there when we can.

And just for those of you who are wondering- We use an old Clipper Cleaner. Not sure what model it is, but it works pretty good yet. Got it at a consignment auction a few years ago because Grandpa's old Clipper was getting pretty beat up. It came with all the screens we need and everything, even though we really only use one set up just for oats.

We still clean a lot of our own seed, have a Clipper 47D, a Carter disc mill and a foresberg gravity table set up in an old 48 ft reefer trailer. We grow a lot of specialty crops, and often the local cleaners can't handle the specialty seeds or prevent contamination with other grains.

My dad was a real pain in the rear because the only way in his book was to shovel in and shovel out. Our oats bin was above the cow barn, ait had a 4" chute near the barn door. We had a alumn spout and a very slow 3" auger 110 volt.

So on Sat morn dad would take feed to the local mill to get ground us three boys would clean the oats OUR WAY. That would just put my dear ol dad into fits because we were no busy. One boy would clean the oats sitting on a chair with a plug in in his hands and the other two boys were shooting baskets. Other than that my dad was a very smart man, but I never did agree with him, on that one subject. He would get over it till next year and we would do it all over again.

I still have a Clipper 2b, it hasn't been used in years. Go clean some Roundup ready soybeans, put them in a brown bag and see how long it takes for the Monsant Gestopo to show up. They hit some of our locals hard. My tennant ended up paying some $125,000 in fines and can never plant Monsanto products again.

Their investigation tactics are right out of Hitlers handbook. They need to be shot.

I clean my seed wheat with a Clipper. Mine is the newer all metal one. Think it is still called a model #2. Used to clean around 6000 bushels of oats and bag it and sell to horse farmers but I quit doing that.

I clean oats with a Clipper 2B. Shovel the oats in from the bin and an auger takes it out to the wagon. When dad was alive we used to bag it all in 3 bushel cloth bags. Considering the price of seed oats its my most profitable 3 hours of the year. I ran 200 bu thru it this year

Haven't saved seed oats for quite awhile. What seed we did save and clean was for our own use we opened up the end of an Alli 60 Allcrop and played around with the wind controls. Worked prety good for us.

I still do oats with a clipper. But not this year cause I am not sowing any this year.

May use it again if the cattle stick around.

About 90% of the winter wheat we plant every year is saved from the year before, we use at least one new (to us) variety for the other 10% so we can pick which one to save from the next year. We don't have our own cleaner, there's a guy that comes out with a portable cleaner. Cleaned 14 tons of wheat last year, this year we'll probably need to do 28-30 tons
