My engine is making oil. Problem started with oil gauge acting irratically. Had about 1 gallon excess oil in crankcase. Drained most out, adding about a qt of new oil. Drove 40 miles, now again is about a qt overfull. How can this happen and engine still runs excellent? Anyone had a problem like this.

David ---

You didn't say if the oil you drained ,had a strange smell.....how old is your truck? is it fuel injected or carb.?

I think your problem is gas getting into the oil pan....if you have a fuel pump, it can be leaking gas into the oil.....

If fuel injected, I don't know ...but I think its gas.....If it was water you would have seen it ( a gallon.).....

some one on here will know..... my info.is old good luck Don

IF it's and older 360 with carburetor, the fuel pump is bad and leakin' gas into engine.

OK, thanks guys. I should have said it is a 2000 model, fuel injected and there is no coolant in the crankcase and the cooling system is full. I'm thinking it has to be gas, but what i don't understand is how it can be getting into the crankcase. If there is a bad injector, wouldn't it be missing; running rough?

Leaky injector so connect a pressure gage to the fuel rail and watch for pressure fall off when the engine is shut down. It isn't leaking bad enough to cause rough running yet. You may be able to find it by checking for particular cylinder missfires during startup or by pulling the plugs and looking for a cylinder running richer than the rest.

Agree Vern. If it is gasoline getting into the oil it has to be coming through one or more injectors. Everything else is at the fuel tank.
