Well I thought I had it narrowed down to using the Allis D-17 but then I got to thinking I have a Farmall M, that I will be putting a water pump on in the next few days. So out of those 2 which would you use and which would use the least amount of gas to do that job

I would do my best to have a tractor with live or preferrably independent PTO to mow with and bale with. I used a JD A to pull a sickle mower with back in the day and thought I had died and gone to heaven when I pulled the same mower with a tractor with independent pto. For curiosity I hooked a square baler to a non live PTO tractor and it didn't take long to see I was mistaken.

I would say put the M on the mower and bale with the 77 since I don't like wraping my legs around a hot transmission and sitting behind a hot motor in july and august but I have to admit the D 17 wouldn't be a bad baleing tractor.power diverter and likely power steering. so just come off of the gas money to run it or build your self a couple of these contraptions and you can cut the fuel bill down that way. just let us know how well they work

Mow and rake with the M. Bale with the D17. Why don't you just try the M for about 15 minutes. Then you will know the D17 is your guy.

I mow with an Oliver 77 and a NH460 moco. I rake with either an Allis C or JD-B both most years. Last year I used another 77 on the NH271 but don't have it any more. I also use an Oliver Super 88 on my NH850 round balers. I like the idea of having 4 tractors so I don't have to switch out all the time. Thats one nice thing about having around 20-30 running tractors on the place

D-17, without a doubt. I used to have a D-14, and used it to square bale. My brother had a Ford 800. He used my D-14 one time and from then on, he rented it to pull his square baler, would not go back to the Ford 800. The power director is really hard to beat when pulling a square baler, when the windrows get too heavy, you can just slip it a little and keep baling. Tom

Should be over a few ounces difference of fuel to do the same job.

But the D17 still hasthe live power.

farmall M is better than the farmall H on baler, its hard for me too say D-17 but it is still the one to use on baler, if you had said any other equipment i would have said FARMALL M.
