I'm surprised there hasn't been any talk about Obummer flying over NYC. I know there is a "no-fly zome" over the White House, but is there one over the Pentagon, or NYC?? Whoever set that up SHOULD have known better. Atleast W knew enough to not fly over it. I know he flew over LA after Katrina.

Do we have any estimates on what was spent flying over and round trip to Iraq after Bush/Chaney manufactured the tail about the weapons of mass destruction? Some of the responses here are so distorted they are humorous.

So try this on:

Uh...? PHOTOSHOP????? in reply to Ben Grimes, 04-29-2009 10:10:50
Think of the expense.... I heard this morning that the picture would cost over $300,000, not including 911 being flooded, people's stress levels pegging, and all the interney flap.

The ENTIRE escapade could have EASILY been avoided with a basic Photoshop created picture.

But when did government on ANY level do things with any regard to logic and/or common sense?

You know poor? Was first thing I thought of too. They could've photoshopped that thing over the great wall of china, through the kremlin, around the moon, under the sea, but nope. And the funniest part? Some poor schmo with a big title and no pull signed off on it, no different than probably a 100 others, and he's the one that got his tail chewed by the nitwit who's idea it probably was in the first place. I'm not going to mention any names, but I can think of a couple of fellas in recent past that if they'd pulled such an "insensitive stunt", the press corps would've hung them live on TV. Don't be expecting none of that to happen over the next couple or few years, no matter the stunt or degree.

Well, this is where it gets fun for conspiracy theorists. The White House press release (see link) clearly calls it "Air Force One". That designation is only legitimate when the President is on board. If the President was in Washington DC, Mr Caldera should not have used that designation in the press release.

So I would agree, the President was (probably)not on board, or was he? ;o)

Yeah that makes it better - they flew an empty plane around New York for pictures.

The flight was a photo op for Barry to give away signed pictures as souvenirs to anyone that flies with him. They thought it would be nice to have the Statue of Liberty in the background - I guess they never heard of photo shop. It was arranged by the White House Military Office director - an appointee of Barry's.

Just so you know the White House Military Office director is a civilian position that acts as a liaison to the Defense Department. The Airforce did not arrange the fly over - they simply responded to orders from the executive office to fly the birds.

Indeed! Any 5th grader with Photoshop and images of the Statue of Liberty and AirForce One cound have accomplished exactly the same thing in about 5 minutes and at a cost of $0.

Sadly our top leadership "still doesn't get it"....

I am hearing that such a photo shoot would have cost 380,000. That would mean that it would have taken the taxes of 42 families for the past year basing the average household paying 9000+/- in Federal tax. This is an insult if that is what really happened. BUT....there are many rumors floating on the interenet....one such is that a renegade Air Force pilot stole the plane and did that as a stunt to symbolize that the presidency has been hijacked (AS MANY BELIEVE). If that was a photo shoot....where was the aircraft doing the picture taking???? why was the F-16 in an offensive position on all the videos (as explained by a retired AF pilot on radio)???? I believe it was photo shoot like I believe I could fly that jet. Look it up yourself....many many rumors, many many experts (or claim to be) have many interesting opinions.

Why couldn't they have photo shopped the pictures for a cost of >$100. No wonder we are broke.

Remember these are the same people that jumped all over the automakers for having private planes. $380,000 to fly one empty 747 around New York (that doesn't include the F16 escort) for a photo shoot.

I doubt the whole thing was as innocent as just a "photo shoot".

I agree with you, not what it seems. Notice how much obammy is in the news and photoed. Dictators live by the same tactics always be seen in a way that makes people think they can not live without you. The news photos I saw showed people running from the plane much like spooked cattle. If you get a chance to see the photos of the people running remember it. People will be running from planes and choppers in a short time as he imposes martial law on us. This flyover was to show his power over the people and how he can do anything he wants.

What do you mean? of course he's in the news and photoed. Last time i checked, he was president of the united states. Pretty important position. Of course he's in the news. He's hardly a dictator. the people of this country elected him. He has yet to declare himself president-for-life. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he probably won't declare himself president-for-life.

He has yet to declare himself president for life. Yeah. I used the word "yet." In that sentence, that word signifies that he hasn't done it. I have no doubt that, in eight years minus 100 days, there will be a different president of the united states.

They notified the local NY police who didn't think it was a necessity to tell the Mayor. Real nice picture of the plane flying around the Statue of Liberty though.
Still don't think it was Obamma's fault other than that it was a very expensive photo. Walt

The mayor's "office" was notified but the guy who took the call, Marc Mugnos, (director of operations in the Office of Citywide Event Coordination) didn't think it was a big deal and didn't bother to tell Bloomberg.

Actually the Feds were big on not letting anyone know that didn't need to know. Apparently they didn't think anyone would notice a low flying 747 with two F16s chasing it.

http://wcbstv.com/topstories/air.force.one.2.996457.html In a memo obtained by CBS 2 HD, the Federal Aviation Administration's James Johnston said the agency was aware of "the possibility of public concern regarding DOD (Department of Defense) aircraft flying at low altitudes" in an around New York City. But they demanded total secrecy from the NYPD, the Secret Service, the FBI and even the mayor's office and threatened federal sanctions if the secret got out.
