I just completely rebuilt the engine in my TO-30. New short block from Central Tractor, head repaired and rebuilt by a Ferguson expert locally, rebuilt rocker assembly and oil pump. Got it all together, set the static timing and she fired right up. But then I noticed it getting hotter and hotter! I finally had to shut her down. I have installed a new water pump and thermostat, but it still gets hot. I also made sure the fan blades had plenty of pitch. The radiator was rebuilt locally a few years ago, and it has been sitting for about 2 1/2 years waiting for this rebuild. I will try to flush it out, but can anyone think of any other reason this tractor is getting too warm?

Thanks!

Larry

will you sell the sheet metal? Mine is rusted. Would consider buying the entire tractor if your interested in selling.

Thanks for all the comments! It turned out the radiator was clogged. I removed it from the tractor and backflushed it with clean water. Lots of chunks of gooey stuff came out. I would complain to the radiator shop that rebuilt it, but it is no longer there. Seems the owners were running some other business on the side...

After making sure that the water ran freely and clearly through the radiator, I put it all back together and !viola! the gauge is rock steady under the "U" in "RUN". I've even done some blading and mowing with it already.

This is like a new tractor! Oops - it pretty much is, since the complete engine is rebuilt. I even put on a new starter and water pump. I think the only engine part not rebuilt or replaced is the distributer.

I had forgotten how much fun plowing and mowing and blading can be with a tractor that works!

Looking forward to many happy Fergie hours..

Larry

Larry, the guys have given good suggestions to investigate. A compression check will identify a leak, and a double check of the point setting and then ignition timing sounds warranted. Remove the thermostat to see if it is the problem. Checking the radiator for flow is a idea, the rebuilder may have clipped too many passages. You should be able to wrap a rag around a hose inserted into the bottom(inlet)and get a good flow out the fill opening. I didn't have any more to add, just expanded the guys ideas. EJ can buy a owners manual at a MF dealer, and he can look up the serial no. of his tractor in the link at the left to determine the year. There's many Ferguson websites, just run a search.

While I won`t argue the fact of timing causing an overheat problem, the fact that it "fired right up" leads me to believe the timing isn`t very far off. Had it been working and under a load, might be a different stroy, but sitting idling shouldn`t cause a problem. Sounds really stupid to ask, but is the thermostat installed in the proper direction? Just because the head was repaired by a local "expert" doesn`t mean there isn`t a problem with it getting combustion into the cooling system. Might be worth while to check for combustion in the radiator. Just a few thoughts to consider. Good luck!!!!! !!!

Timing too far advanced or a head gasket leak can cuase the problem. "With a new rebuild I would hope your timing is a little too far advanced. Could also be you have a bad temp gauge. Might also make sure your radiator fins are blown out good too.
