Gary, I recently changed the seals on the PTO shaft of my '49 M. The original seal was a thick (front to back) rawhide seal. This was replaced by two rubber lip type seals. I positioned the seals in their holder such that the lips avoided contact with a rough spot on the shaft. No more leaks. Be sure to get a new gasket for the seal holder to PTO housing cover when you get the seals. The whole job took less than 30 minutes. On the control rod problem, Red and Haas have given you the straight skinny. Good luck, Phil
